just finished watching HBOs rome.

Thirsting for some more roman kino. thinking about watching this unless you guys have any better suggestions...
>>
>>71230884
Spartacus is great, but don't go in expecting anything like Rome.
>>
>>71231037

shit man. rome really spoiled me.

do you suggest anything other than spartacus to watch? perhaps movies as well?
>>
>>71231037
I'm actually kind of the opposite. I watched Spartacus and liked it and heard people talking Rome. It's nothing alike?
>>
>>71231118

rome is 9.5/10 kino my friend

best sets ive seen on ANY tv show

i wouldnt really even put in in the class of TV

its like a really long good movie
>>
>>71231037
How is it different than Rome? I'm on ep 8 of Rome. After all the praise Rome has gotten I'm pretty let down. Not saying it's bad. Does Spartacus have a more focused lense?
>>
>>71231293
Well I haven't seen Rome, but Spartacus focuses on the Gladiator Spartacus and his master Batiatus. It'll shift focus from Spartacus being in the arena or training to Batiatus and his wife trying to gain more influence in the city they live in.

Each season is kind of different though. Season 2 is a prequel that is basically the same idea but with a gladiator that won his freedom. Gannicus. It's pretty much Gladiator the TV show.
>>
>>71231222
>i wouldnt really even put in in the class of TV

>its like a really long good movie
No it doesn't. It looks no better than GoT. It's tv-tier to the bone. It's obvious it doesn't have the budget of a film. Stop going overboard like a fucking redditor.
>>
>>71231415
I see you GOTfag
>>
>>71231415

lol u nigger ive been here for 10 years

and your opinion is 100% wrong you fucking retard
>>
>>71230884

yo didnt the main character fucking die IRL?

i remember hearing something like this, how did they deal with this ?
>>
>>71231456
>>71231529
Feel free to prove me wrong. I've had an HBO subscription since Tales From The Crypt and Spawn were relevant. Rome threads are always "it was great, yeah?" "it was fucking epic! best show ever! I fucking hate game of thrones by the way! fuck proles and plebs! we patrician!" then the thread locks. Zero discussion. All these daily slew of Rome threads amount to. Pretty boring.
>>
>>71230884
Spartacus is like gladiator would have been if it was made by showtime. Lots of dick on screen like game of thrones, lots of violence with gratuitous amounts of blood. Betrayal is frequent, but also honor.

I haven't seen Rome, but spartacus is worth a watch.
>>
>>71230884
Watch it until Spartacus dies from cancer, I personally just couldn't stand the next guy,
its not as if he was particularly bad, maybe even first guy wasn't so good, but I got used to him and every scene was somehow off with new Spartacus
>>
File: cancer.jpg (44 KB, 684x433) Image search: [Google]
cancer.jpg
44 KB, 684x433
>>71231561
They made a prequel season while he was being treated for cancer in hopes that he would recover in time for the next real season. Unfortunately, that was not the case, so they had to recast him and he died shortly after.
>>
>>71231561
Replaced him with some other guy that wasn't as good but supposedly tried hard. I never got around to watching the second season but first season and the prequel bit are great.

I've heard the series finale is great if you can get past the loss of the main actor, I'll have to do a marathon of the whole show one of these days just to properly finish the second season.

Spartacus is great, Rome is great, but they are great for entirely different reasons.
>>
can we all agree that batiatus was the star of the show?
>>
>>71231739
Nah, he did recover while they were doing the prequel.

Then he fucking relapsed and died.
>>
>>71230884
Season 1&2 are a must, OP. If you still feel like you can continue on without the most vital actor that made Spartacus great than give 3&4 a go.
>>
>tfw was genuinely sad when sura is returned to him only to die seconds later
>tfw never been more pleased at a season finale than I was with spartacus season 1
>>
>>71230884
you should have been here back when it was still airing

this was basically /tv/'s TTGL
>>
For anyone trying to get into Rome, the first couple episodes are the hardest to get into.

But it's fucking worth it.

Good ol Solonius.
>>
>>71230884
Season 1 and the prequel that you need to watch right after, gods of the Arena is god tier action/drama. No scene is wasted.

Vengeance is the weakest entry, and feels weak at times.

War of the Damned has the rape train
>>
>>71231683

ive never used the word epic in my life, and if you cant see why rome was an amazing show, than you truly are tasteless
>>
>>71230884
>Thirsting for some more roman kino.
Yeah, you're fucked lad.

Rome is literally as good as it gets, everything else is downhill from there.

I watched the entire series in two days, it started slow but by the 3rd episode Rome was easily the best show I've ever seen. Should have started with Spartacus or something and worked your way up instead.
>>
Why are all the actors on Spartacus on Arrow?
>>
>>71232005
wasn't he a pedophile?
>>
>>71231683
Rome threads actually occasionally cap out, though it's been awhile.

Quality of the board has slid sharply this last year, which is saying something when you started with shit to begin with.
>>
>>71232104
Actors work with their friends a lot.

I don't know if it's because they're BFFs, because they're unemployed at the same time, or because they have the same agent/contacts
>>

I don't remember exactly what he said to his family right before he died but I remember getting all clenched up reading it. Dude seemed like a genuinely cool guy.

Imagine finally fucking making it, getting a great show that fans love and a rule that's a blast to play and a family that loves you and that's when life is like yah, nah, yer done mate.

At least he got to go out on top.

Ah fuck it, I'm going to watch. Should I watch it in airing order or watch the prequel season first?
>>
>>71231415
>It looks no better than GoT.
Rome is superior to GoT in nearly any category you could choose to compare the two series. And no, that is not hyperbole.
>>
>>71232476
airing order of course
>>
>>71232476
Prequel is meant to be seen after the first season.
>>
>>71232476
Watch the prequel first.

>>71232510

is the prequel season 2?
>>
>>71232636
yes
>>
>>71232636
Gods of the Arena is the prequel.
>>
>>71232636

it begins directly after season 1 before going into a flashback so watch it second.

also, the show is way better than rome.
>>
>>71232703

but wasnt that aired last ? like after season 3 ?
>>
>>71232476

the prequel spoils the end of season 1, i wish it didnt, so watch season 1 then prequel.
>>
>>71231293
Spartacus is more like 300, same visual style, same over-the-top gore.
>>
>>71232806
Airing order was
Blood and Sand>Gods of the Arena>Vengeance>War of the Damned
>>
>>71232806
After season 1 to wait for the actor to recover from his cancer.

Before it became terminal.

Loved Rome and found Spartacus reall lame.

I recommend Plebs instead
>>
>>71232806
No, in between season one and three.
The prequel was just an excuse to wait while Andy was in recovery. But for filler it was fucking awesome.
>>
>tfw watching Rome actors get bit parts in other shows, sometimes more than one actor at the same time
Feels bad man
>>
>>71231293
Spartacus is focused on killing roman fucking shits.
>>
>>71232564
This show was a meme extravaganza. Too bad they killed the best man off.

>>
>>71232753
Bullshit. Rome is not worse at all. Though that plot twist in season 1 was legendary. Sewer scene.
>>
>>71232854
>>71232907

im confused, i want to watch everything in the order it was aired

right now i am watching s01e01 where he went with the romans and then left them to go back to save his wife from the barbarians who burnt the villiage

is this the correct episode to watch first?
>>
>>71233096
Yes. After you finish that season you will watch the one about a character called Gannicus instead. And after that you will start watching the seasons with the new actor.
>>
>>71233129
>After you finish that season you will watch the one about a character called Gannicus instead

so is that just season 2?
>>
>>71232476
Watch Season 1, then the prequel. Then the last two seasons. The prequel spoils the first season in the first five seconds of the first episode.
>>
>>71233275
Fucking shit just watch it and google it if you have to.
>>
>>71233275
Sometimes it gets listed as season 2, sometimes it doesn't. You'll know it when you see it, it starts with the exact same scene that season one ends on.
>>
>>71233275
No, they way they do it is stupid.

They don't consider the prequel to be season 2. But watch it as if it is. You also can't skip it because the events that happen in the prequel directly relate to the third season. But you can't watch the prequel first because it'll spoil the first season.

So watch it:
>Blood and Sand (season 1)
>Gods of the Arena (prequel)
>Vengeance (season 2)
>War of the Damned (season 3)
>>
>>71233074

rome lacked pathos. it felt so dry, marginally better than a cheap discovery channel documentary. the characters are paper thin and the action is serviceable at best.

describe caesar, octavius or brutus's relationship. you can't because they barely interact and when they do its the most cliche shit like playing chess. you never see brutus and caesar's friendship so the betrayal has no pathos. you never see octavius and caesar interact except for that one scene where octavius witnesses the seizure, so you never feel attatched to him inheriting the empire.

the show is just so monumentally shit at character development and interaction aside from vorenus and pullo and even that falls apart by season 2.

spartacus blows rome out of the fucking water in every season except vengence.
>>
Definately watch season 1 first. Episode 5 "Shadow games", was one of my favorites. After that it really starts getting hold of you and goes to another level. Give it an honest chance you wont be disappointed.
>>
>>71233096
>>71233275
Are you retarded? This anon >>71232854
Already told you the order to watch them in
>>
>>71233444
Rome is less about the soap opera and more about watching history unfold and entertaining characters. S2 Octavian was GOAT, same with Mark Antony in every scene he's in.

Of course, if you're trying to watch the show looking for emotional connections outside of Vorenus and Pullo, you're gonna be disappointed.
>>
well i just finished s01e01

all that fake blood explosions were fucking retarded to be honest
>>
>>71233812
We told you, it's more like 300 than anything semi-historical like Rome.

Still, worth a watch. Give it a few episodes.
>>
>>71233837

yea ill give it a few more eps - hope more substance comes into play. because so far all i got was a bunch of sweaty man porn and unrealistic combat.
>>
>>71233812

Honestly, in terms of writing, directing, most of the acting, the budget basically every aspect of making a show or movie Rome excels in but for me it didn't top the visceral entertainment of Spartacus (yes I get I'm probably pleb) then again there wasn't anything in all of Spartacus except maybe "Kill Them All" that tops Pullo in the arena, FUCKING THIRTEEN
>>
>>71231118
Rome was better made and all but if that's your preference it's fine don't listen to the millions who say that you enjoying something is wrong, if you like it better that's perfectly fucking fine but they stand fucking Roman and want everyone to bend to their rule, remember Spartacus, the freedom to make his own mistakes is all he ever wanted.
