STAR TREK was never very popular with the general audience.
The 2009 reboot built a lot of good will for the property, which was squandered when they took four years to release the sequel, and it wasn't particularly remarkable.
Any good will that was left was once again squandered when they've taken two years to release a sequel, and it frankly looks kinda' cheap and the tone is all over the place.

Fuck all that noise, 4 years isn't even that long. The real problem is the movies aren't that good and are forgettable, meanwhile they now have Star Wars to compete with, which has always had more mass appeal. The 2009 reboot was really only so successful because it FELT like star wars. Now people don't have to settle for a substitute.
