It entirely depends on the speed at which it enters the atmosphere.
Slow enough, and no, it won't destroy the atmosphere. In fact, it'll only cause significant damage to earths ecology upon actually contacting the crust.
It wasn't accurate at all in the movie, though. Something that large and fast would kill a lot more people.
