usually when something like that happens its because a producer brings in another professional editor to recut the movie as they see fit, though, like what happened with A New Hope. I'm talking about literal studio-mandate cuts, like when Universal demanded 45 minutes of footage be cut from Warcraft and we ended up with a horribly paced film and underdeveloped characters, or when WB demands ~30 minutes be cut from BvS and the plot barely makes sense anymore.

What version did you watch? Lucas special editioned it like he did with Star Wars and put soem unfitting CGI in it.
Although I liked most of the changes he made as in a lot of cases it genuinely improved the movie. But there are some really shitty CGI monkeys, insects, and a retard as fuck speed racer-esque addition to the chase scene at the end.

I think if a movie is trying to make some sort of statement, then you have to judge for yourself if they made their statement effectively or not. If it can't convince you of anything or at least help you understand a point of you that isn't yours/you disagree with, then I'd say it's ineffective.

you can't make a film about war, or the military, etc without it being political. American Sniper is about public mythologising and classic American ideals infecting the individual and their worldview (and how the stress of these ideals on someone like Eastwood's (emphasis on Eastwood's) Kyle can corrupt them). how the desperate need for an American hero reduces a troubled man to just a symbol, that's what people calling the funeral montage jingoistic are missing, or the film jingoistic at all are missing.
