Watched parts of it as a kid but not the entire film until recently (thanks /tv/). My new favorite of all time. I need more sci-horror in my life. Can anyone suggest similar films?
Sadly, there's simply no good sci-fi horrors out there other than The Thing and Alien. Everything else that critics and fans praise comes at least ten levels below The Thing. Carpenter ruined the genre for everyone else.

Alien
The Fly (1986)
You should also check out John Carpenter's other work. The Thing is his only sci-fi horror film but he made a bunch of amazing horror films and action films.
Event Horizon
Pandorum ( Not too good but still sci-fi horror)

Best poster ever. For some reason, it's rather haunting and unnerving.

Alien was already suggested, but i would add a B movie that was portrayed as a ripoff of Alien under the sea, but i still like it.
It's Leviathan with Peter Weller, it has some similar themes; the effects are not so bad if you put it in the context...the script and the acting is rather poor though, but it still has some good scenes.
comfy dracula kino
everyone who gets recommended this film loves it in my experience.
#1 on the comfycore list.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

I remember in either the late 1980's or early 1990's taking turns with a friend whose parents had a Laserdisc player flipping the discs over.
Great movie. The comic book sequels were great to eh, the video game sequel had too many pre-scripted scenes, and the prequel is okay.

Don't forget the 1956 version too.
Not sure if this is sci-horror, but you'd probably like it.

When did you rewatch The Fly?
I saw it recently and thought it wasn't nearly as good. Its actually very simple. The effects are absolute 10/10 towards the end and a lot of it is still great.
But I think its more like a 7.5 or 8/10 rather than kino

That's Lovecraftian

>Hurr durr what is the subgenre of horror that refers to horror themes similar to works of Lovecraft?
The absolute Carpenkino of all time is Ghosts of Mars.

What about ELVIS?
No love for the Prince of Darkness?

I liked ExistenZ a lot, but its one of those movies you think is absolutely fucking retarded or awesome.
More sci fi than horror though.
