It was 200 years ago. EVERYBODY worked all day and lived in houses they built with their own hands (or tenements built by somebody else). They had no running water, or electricity. There isn't much difference between a slave and a lower class free white during that period, outside of certain voting rights, etc. There's probably more separation between poor and rich today than there was between free white and black slave then.
It's disingenuous to take a spoiled 12 year old in 2016 who has broadband internet in his room and show him images of slaves working in the fields while a teacher drones on about how oppressive it was.
