I was pretty disappointed by this. The whole "we can't escape time is working against us" always comes across as stupid to me because you know that they'll escape the seemingly unsolvable paradox. It'd be different if the actual story was good, but it really wasn't I didn't like any of the characters, Mel was annoying, and I feel like they had the Doctor mope around for the first half just so Mel had something to do besides get imprisoned. All in all this is the first BF story I've been truly disappointed with.

Then you'll never like Mel. I like the story, as it shows the start of "dark7" during Mel's run as companion. Plus, we get yet another story about what the Doctor would do if he thinks he'll die. The mopey nature works for that plot point, and goes a little way toward making the story feel serious.
I think this story works better if you like Mel. For me, I read the Six books, which add a lot more to their relationship.
