No shield walls are really effective in pre-gunpowder combat and the spear is arguably the best pre-gunpowder killing tool in existence. What wasn't shown in the battle was the way shield bearers would stab over their shields and into their enemies' skulls with a sword when the enemy cleared the spears and started to press against the shield. They show it in vikings pretty well.
