Shyamalamadingdong was good up until the Happening. I have no clue what anyone was thinking with that movie.
The Last Airbender movie was pretty good for trying to adapt a cartoon he clearly hasn't seen and/or doesn't understand why anyone enjoyed.
Coppola is still good, he obviously doesn't take on projects like Apocalypse Now anymore because of Apocalypse Now. Most of his 80s movies were good, The Godfather III was great, and I guarantee that 99% of those who shit on Twixt have never seen the movie. Tetro was great.
Spielberg has always been an inconsistent director. He has top tier projects like Duel, Jaws, Minority Report and War of the Worlds and shit ones like E.T., Schindler's List, and Catch Me If You Can. Most of his films were just middling like Close Encounters, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, and Lincoln.
The truth is most directors who are quality directors are always quality directors, they just start making movies that no longer appeal to their original audience, and thus they receive negativity from that audience and are regarded as bad by all.

This. What he did was so statistically unlikely that it makes sense he never made a top tier movie again. He just happened to make his 4 best movies in a row. Spielberg spread them out over 40 years (and none of Spielberg's films come close to Godfather 1 and 2 and Apocalypse Now).
John Carpenter had a pretty tragic fall from grace. In the 70s and 80s he could do no wrong but in the 90s he went to shit. His only good post-80s film is In the Mouth of Madness.
