Back in the day, you could actually sell a product exclusively to tech dorks and make enough money to stay in business for years.

But that was before venture capital and their need for growth, constant growth, at unstoppable, cancerous rates.

I know they are having trouble with the UI/UX, and people don't really understand wtf PP does, but I wonder, since it is a P2P platform, whether just having an extra 10k users might not be enough to spark the "unexpected" results that somehow make it useful to nontechnical people. Even though those 10k users in India are just dicking around, they might help the platform push pass a threshold that even Richard isn't aware of. No, not Skynet, but something unexpected. And, of course, Bighead will manage to profit by it, to everyone's surprise, except, of course he will.
>>
>>71029806
The platform predictions based on the files people upload. The clickfarmers aren't uploading any files, they're just logging in and out.
>>
>>71030068
makes predictions
>>
>>71030068
But does logging in and out count as "daily users?" Seems like they would have to add some amount of data to qualify, if only sky shots from their phones. I know we didn't see any of that going on.
>>
I don't even get why they're trying to market this to normies. Shouldn't they go after companies that use a shit ton of data storage?

Nobody in tech has any business sense.

Back in the '70s and '80s DEC was well-known for making the best computers on the planet and having the worst marketing sense on the planet. That's part of why they aren't around anymore.
>>
>>71029423
>Back in the day, you could actually sell a product exclusively to tech dorks and make enough money to stay in business for years.

So your files are split into pieces between everyone else's machines and when you access them you just access them from a bunch of other users. It uses machine learning (the program figures out the fastest and most efficient way to do this on the fly) to make it fast.

Why was this so hard to teach people and why do they actually need to know this?

It's funny because neural nets were never mentioned in earlier expository sequences, nor are they necessary for effective compression algorithms. At the end of the day it shouldn't matter how technically sophisticated the algorithm is; a simple UI is all that's required to give people access to their data. It's more about characterizing the platform as something vaguely more technical than practical to the ordinary consumer, and thus "ahead of its time" in that sense. Suspension of disbelief.

This entire season I was wondering why the fuck they didn't sell the box once it was finished AND work on the platform. After Gavin set the price point they definitely would have been able to convince that company not to go with an exclusivity deal.

The box was fucking done and it was a great product. They just didn't sell it so Hooli could this episode. I love this show but that's just some shit writing right there.

At first I was like 19k daily users its probably that small because who the fuck wants to bother with compressing files everyday. I mean I dont think I have that need?

>>
>>71040139
Im guessing the selling point is that it would use much less data, and a big part of it is sharing files between users, so it would be replacing normal youtube videos and facebook posts. Also, if Pied Piper was actually a good idea someone would be making it since the idea is out there. Its a show so it just needs to sound plausible.
>>
>not free software

glad it's ded
>>
>>71040268
It's not just compressing files. It can store your photos and videos on your phone or computer without taking up any space, because they exist in a cloud-like network.
>>
>>71040268
I agree, it's much more valuable to businesses. But still, space is space. The average person would be able to load up their phones with as many pictures and videos as they want to. That's not really the case today.

It apparently has desktop usage as well, which for me would definitely be useful. I'd be able to fit a lot more movies (and games? I don't know) on my 1 TB hard drive.

>>71040356
it is actually a good idea, it's just that it's not (currently?) possible to compress files that ridiculously much. I mean, in terms of worst case performance, every compression algorithm has certain files that cannot be compressed by even a bit
>>
>>71040467
When and if the technology does exist for a real-life Pied Piper, you could have entire movie libraries in 4k on your phone or computer with barely and storage being used for it.
>>
>>71040249
I was hoping the elephant would go into rampage and everyone just scowling at gavin.
>>
>>71028637
Why didn't Pied Piper just sell their box while developing the platform? They had already built it.
>>
>>71040467
Yeah to my understanding, you need online access, but you would need to download barely anything to have full access to your files. If you have the connection to stream Netflix or something then you're already miles ahead of the connection you need to download your movies through Pied Piper.
>>
>>71040467
Do they use middle out? Checkmate
>>
man, I thought the whole point of this episode was going to be the turnaround when they hire that one black woman to market for them
I mean they've essentially made her into a Checkov's gun, showing her twice and mentioning her by name later
>>
>>71040467
The compression algorithm is obv useful, but the platform seems like an overcomplicated version of cloud storage. The p2p aspect is neat, but adds in a ton more problems, like having a shitton of redundand copies. If all copies of N shards are destroyed, the file is gone.

There's nothing funny about socially awkward asspies in tech if you've been around them long enough. The only fun part is you can set them off easily if you know what irks them and they deserve.

How those TBBT reruns going?

Pardon me, but if you've been working in tech for a while and are exposed to these types throughout the years, I doubt you want to sit and watch a show about them. It's like being a corrections officer in a fucked up prison full of massive degenerates then watching Oz when you kick back in your lazee boy, no thanks, I'll pass, but whatever floats your boats.

Because Malaent agreed to buy the PP boxes for 3 times the asking price, but in that agreement they demanded to exclusice rights to Richard's algorithm, and the platform the squad wanted to create needed that exact algorithm. When they said they would reword the contract and take it back to Malaent (Laurie really wanted the platform made), Jack mentioned that Malaent asked for that specific demand in order for there to be a deal.

Jesus Christ
I feel so dumb now knowing there's a stunning amount of gags I didn't get

Goddamn Monica looked fine as fuck this episode.
>>
>>71042376
that was pretty arbitrary, Malaent wouldn't have any use for the algorithm and no CEO would give them rights over their IP over a single contract.

The show jumped the shark when Erlich sold his 10% of a company potentially worth hundreds of millions for 700k, he could have sold his house or got a loan or whatever to pay that and not lose his shares, such a retarded move.

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME??
I would have never thought that it was anything but satire because the whole clusterfuck is so disjointed and dumb, how fucking arrogant are these fucks in the tech industry to shit out garbage like this for real?
>>
>>71043286
it's kind of a throwaway since he stays at the company and allows the writers to involve him more in the plot. Not great writing but not exactly shit either
>>
did anyone else burst out laughing at the scrambled eggs part. holy shit.
>>
>>71037003
they didn't sell it because the company the were selling to would have exclusive rights to pied piper technology which went against Richard's goal which was making the world a better place with compression tech.
