A Mary Sue is just automatically good at everything.

Columbo was a great detective but he wasn't just an automatic crime solver so he had to act stupid and let criminals trap themselves, if he was a Mary Sue he would instantly burst into the room 4 minutes into the show with all the evidence in his hand and the exact knowledge of what happened.
