>novelty value
>discs aren't just shit to leave on your dusty shelves, they're works of art and contribute to the general ambance of the room

You're a hipster who is fascinated with typewriters, vinyl music players, Atari consoles Red-Blue 3D glasses, etc.

DVD and VHS
>Unlike DVDs, which carry Dolby Digital audio in digital form, LaserDiscs store Dolby Digital in a frequency modulated form within a track normally used for analog audio

Track wheel lets you rewind & slow down explosions, which is honestly the best feature.

Why the fuck did this not happen on bluray? Can you not do that with non analog video signals or something? Frame by frame is also cool as hell.

The feature worked on only specific Laserdisks.
I'm gonna have this guy explain it instead since I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Original audio mixes are really the only reason to hang onto them.

For example, the original mono track for Terminator 1. The opening, several scenes, and every gunshot blast sound totally different in the new 5.1 soundtrack that has been going around.

Any other big releases besides Terminator? any other specific examples would be great. Then again, you could just mux in that audio track into the bluray version if you could make a copy of it.

because they're fucking awesome

Because I inherited around 50 laserdiscs from my parents, including SW OT.

haven't seen this one in a while. well done, friend.

It's really novel to see DVD-quality video that is obviously stored in an analog format

I don't have a player but I have the Aliens Director's Cut boxset which comes on 4 discs, one of which is the bonus features which was pretty novel for the time

On this topic, is there a reason to own a VHS player? I found one and I feel like if I throw it out I'll live to regret it. Probably because they are so hard to find and current players aren't compatible with VHS.

If your name is James and you're gonna take people back to the past.

unique special features on many LD releases for me.

bram stoker's dracula, fincher's se7en, lord of illusions, species... all have extras not ported over for DVD or Blu-ray.
>>
>>71013644

50% of what came out on VHS never got re-released, so in many cases there's no other way to watch something that's on VHS.
