Fuck you Vincent Ward, you were the worst story writer ever. Worse even than Lindelof.

As a standalone movie it's not terrible but it's just a bizarre way to follow up on a movie that didn't really need a sequel to begin with.

I was reading into Alien^3 some time ago, and there is some idiotic lower-canon notion that the victim is really one "Turk", like from the comics or something, which is repeated among the spergier fansites. This, despite the fact that the completed film (both cuts?) clearly identifies the mangled marine corps corpse as (wait for it) Hicks! Apparently in this other narrative, there is a retconning confusion of identity.
Some people have their canon all out of whack.

You're not supposed to make total sense out of it, just know that he caught a Bad End. Flashes of teeth badly out of place when you're actually watching it, and know what to look for.
Some heavy beam or piece of equipment falls on Hicks during the evac, crushing and killing him in his head/chest area. Then he (the body) sits for a time, both at the crash site and before the funeral, so presumably the flies started getting at him, one way or another.

I dislike Alien^3, but the decision to do away with the previous supporting cast is not my main complaint about the flick. Even I will acknowledge that it's a valid story choice to start things off on a bleak tone (since that's what they were going for), but people only ever come to this movie as an entertainment. That's what it's supposed to be. The bleakness of things is out-of-place, and later reinforced by all the stupid violent criminals and even the stupid minders, that I personally don't care about (who are my main complaint about the film).
What do the first two installments have in common, which the third utterly lacks? In spite of their nasty subject matter, the films still have a little /sense of humor about themselves/. Whether it's Brett's Rights or Hudson's stupid banter, we get just a /little/ relief, here and there. Alien^3 breaks the rule of drama, that the highest drama has to have traces of comedy in order to tell an interesting, even humane story. Alien^3 has none of that. Alien^3 is a humorless movie.
I don't particularly want to watch "Ripley and Hicks and Newt and the gang!" again, but /fuck/. Land us somewhere with some halfway relatable characters who aren't all bald fungible forgettable things. And I reject the retort that "that's the point".

Unironically yes. When a film is wholly, totally devoid of any humor whatever, it ceases to be human, and therefore irrelevant to humans. It becomes merely a chore.
A good example of what I'm talking about is Manos: The Hands of Fate. Short of Torgo's walk, the film by itself without Joel and the bots helping is so abjectly humorless and awful that the brain is forced to crack jokes just to even stay with it. In the internal logic of MST3K-land, even Joel and the bots had a particularly hard time with it - the Mads even apologized for sending them that one. The characters of the TV show serve as an example of what the brain is forced to do to keep itself amused in the face of a truly boring flick.
Go back and re-watch whatever High Drama you have in mind, that you think disprove my premise (they don't). You'll realize that they have little beats of humor which keep it palatable, even if they're only doled out at the rate of about once an hour, or at one important beat in the film. Spoonful of sugar.

Alien is like a nightmare. I want to explore that ship, but I'd be terrified at the same time.
Aliens is like a fun cheesy videogame. I'd like to be one of those marines.
Alien 3 is like a depressing job at a factory, every aesthetic choice was to make things as dreary as possible. I never want to go to that shithole planet.

Except they punish this and everything the second movie stood for in avenging this poor woman's life because someone had to happenstance upon some Lovecraftian monster with ideas above their station.
Ellen Ripley deserved better and the whole point of the second movie was her taking back her life no matter what the Xenomorph did to her.
3 just spits all over the resounding theme of renewed hope by sheer force of greed and inconsideration for crafting cinematic art as usual.
