I enjoyed Earthshock. Not the best Cyberman story, but certainly not dull. I remember someone on Confidential complaining about the Cybermen always saying "excellent", because they should have no emotions and no concept of anything being " excellent ".
Having no music for the credits was absolutely brutal. Bravo JNT. Even if you don't like Adric, it gives you a real gut feeling of " fucking hell a companion died"

It's a nice tense story, loved the first part, wish it had focused more on the atmosphere of the caves and the more interesting guards protecting the Cybermen. Murray is an ok composer with some good ideas occasionally. His worship though is baffling to me. But modern fandom is more like cheerleading than trad fandom and there is a greater tendency towards absolute sycophancy and fetishizing things than in the past.
That comes from outside the UK in general.

And why bring up Heaven Sent? Aside from sounding utterly unlike your other two links, it's probably the single greatest episode score Gold has ever composed because it both develops its own motifs over 53 minutes and knows when to pipe down, be minimal or abstract.
Funnily enough, I actually agree the soundtracks have started to become a bit forgettable. But if anything that's because too much of it is fluff and not enough is like the examples you gave, which at least stand out! (Another highlight from series 8 is 'Fear', the theme from Listen.) Having said that, I'll still take it over the absolutely atrocious overwrought shite he turned out for A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Don't just go 'oh, he did this unusual thing in a few places --> that must be why I don't like it'. Actually look at things and form a coherent picture.
