Are sex scenes the worst thing to happen to cinema? I think the worst thing a movie can have is a sex scene. I just think they are completely pointless.

Like, what's the point of them? Is it to be tittilating or arousing? We know its acting and not real, if we wanted something arousing, we'd go watch porn. Is it because its relevant the two characters had sex? They can do that without a sex scene, like show them in bed together, or going into a room together.

Sex scenes are pointless, and half the time do nothing but slow the entire movie down and make it awkward viewing if you're watching it with anyone.

it's to pad the movie. Like a long shot or a lingering establishment shot.

After sex or even sometimes during if you're an odd bird like me you'll want to converse with your partner on your most intimate thoughts. So narrativly it's certainly important and justified being there. If you're referring to scenes that actually show the act of sex then yes I agree it's poor film making.
>>
>>70992340
Passion is a really hard thing to put on film, but I think that's the main thrust of those kinds of scenes. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I think a lot of times sex scenes in movie fail because like in real life there has to be some kind of buildup for the sex to be meaningful, they have to "set the mood" so to speak.

Something being vital is what qualifies it not was warranting screen time? Well, eating is a vital function for human beings too but that also doesn't get much on screen attention.

Showing two people just fucking doesn't actually convey a lot outside of 'they fucked' and could just as easily be left implicit and be construed precisely the same way without having an unnecessary sequence put in.

The only film I have ever seen that did a 'sex' scene correctly was American Beauty, because it conveyed information about the characters that wouldn't have otherwise come to light without that scene having happened.

Well good thing you didn't address any of the other salient points of the post, you're definitely not an idiot now.

The point was that something being vital on paper doesn't consequently make it important for a film if it isn't implemented in a way that actually makes it important.
>>
>>70992340
It's just awkward to me knowing that they are faking it with several people watching them behind camera. At least with porn it's the intention to sell sex by actually showing it. For movies it just feels awkward and not arousing at all, especially if it's celebrities who want you to respect them.

i'm not going to be able to sufficiently explain myself (it's 5am where i live and i've been up all night) but to put it briefly, it has an incredibly unique atmosphere of stylized hyper-realism that makes it feel like a crime film shot according to the rules of Dogme 95. that plus the incredible thematic throughline of the weightlessness and flux of modern life that Mann ran throughout the entire film.
>>
>>70992618
Unlike animals, humans have a sense of shame and do not want to see other humans going at it. That is also why civilized people wear clothes in public.

Any civilized person would feel embarrassed to see such primal behavior while they are amongst others. Enjoy porn in the privacy of your own home, not in a fucking theater filled with people.
>>
>>70992340
OP I actually agree that 'elaborate' sex scenes tend to slow movies down. However some sex scenes work well. Sex happens in real normal lives so bitching about it is no different than saying "Do we REALLY need to see people drink beer in movies? What's the point of showing alcohol consumption...am I supposed to feel drunk?

Sex happens. Some sex scenes are terrible and some are decent. It's nothing to get worked up about.
>>
>>70993444
HOL UP

You didn't like Miami Vice? It's pure Mann kino, there's literally nothing bad about that movie.
>>
>>70993066
Agreed. It's a shame most sex scenes are just awkward or gratuitous. The ones with no nudity and just have them under the blankets are the worst.
>>
>>70993749
>unique atmosphere of stylized hyper-realism
that seemed cartoonish, but played totally straight and that combo didn't work for me. I guess it could be fun if you could sink yourself into that universe.
>>
>>70994119
yeah, you really have to be on board with it from the first frame of the film. Mann's other films allow you time to absorb yourself into the world of the characters, but MIAMI VICE just brings you into it immediately, and never gives you time to catch your breath. i really recommend it as the last of his films.

I hate this new tumblr definition of asexual that means "I don't really like sex ALL the time"

>>
>>70992919
I agree with you that sex scenes should have a purpose, but I believe all scenes in a film should be held to the same standard. Fundamentally they are no different from any other scene, the only thing that sets them apart is that like other exploitation type content they can be used to drive interest by less competent filmmakers. I do not believe a movie needs to justify a sex scene for inclusion more than any other scene, or avoid having them. Likewise they are not any more necessary than any other scene, and aren't required whenever two characters have sex.

A sex scene I can think of that served a purpose without any stated information and only lasting a couple of seconds on screen is the sex scene from the Dawn of the Dead remake; it contrasts well with the previous scenes and gets across the point that people in the mall are safe and comfortable enough to start sexual relationships, despite what's happening just outside.

film is a visual medium. sex is a very tangible way of showing what kind of relationship and dynamic two people have wether it's rough, consensual, passionate or silly. it can be as full of meaning as any baby stroller rolling down a staircase
think of satan sex in rosemary's baby. the "sex scene" in persona. the avatar sex scene which symbolizes how much james cameron wants to create his own cgi waifus and ditch 3d pigs

asking why there are sex scenes is like asking why there are fight scenes when you can just have one die and the fight's over. I don't mind watching fights. I don't mind watching sex scenes. neither makes me want to jack off and both can have qualities
>>
>>70995146
There are also many useless action scenes, and they belong to action movies.

Useless sex scenes belong to porn.

great movies aren't bogged by unnecessary sex scenes either way so I don't see what the problem is
>>
>>70995463
The problem is that 95% of movies aren't great and they add sex scenes to sell more. It's annoying.
>>
>>70992340
sex scenes are no different from any other scene in that your view of fictitious depictions likely aligns with your view of instances irl. Almost all of your are probably way more conservative than you realize. Wake up and realize we're all just bodies, fuck; filmmakers know this.

People that believe this don't understand storytelling whatsoever. I'm sorry but there's only so many ways you can show certain things. It's vital to certain stories. People that say sex scenes are pointless simply don't understand why they're there in the first place. And to compare it to pornography is ridiculous. They're not doing it for real.
>>
>>70996981
I guess the idea is that unless something is supposed to happen that is significant to the story during the actual sex scene, there's no real point in showing it.

It's kinda like showing someone take a shit. We know they do it. But is it actually necessary to see it? It can be, but usually isn't.

i only hate it when its just random one night stands that dont build any type of character relationship and are just there for the purpose of ticking the hot sex scene quota. And a lot of american tv shows and movies are BASED on one night stand sex scenes.

I like sex scenes

I agree that it can be pointless in terms of plot, story, themes, or characterization, with one exception. I don't see people put any allegory into a normal sex scenes.

But I think movies are also about visual stimulation. I know some will say we have porns for that. But no. It just feel better.

And I want to point out that one exception is in horrors when you have sex with aliens, monsters, demons or ghosts.
