+you travel all around the world and see the world from a perspective few others share
+you learn skills very few others know, like how to find your position on a map by measuring the height of the sun above the horizon
+6 months of vacation per year, and you make so much money that you don't need to take another job during that time off
-the work is often either tedious or extremely stressful and when standing watch in the middle of the ocean hours really drag
-7 day workweek and long hours (but that means tons of overtime)
-no getting away from your coworkers and boss
-captains are always assholes, no exceptions
-surprisingly little time spent in port (but you can easily travel on your own during vacation)
-the unions are stuck in the dark ages and require you to physically go to the union hall each day to bid for jobs, if you wont join the 21st century and let me leave my email then contact me when my name comes up atleast join the 20th and let me leave my phone number
-did I mention that captains are assholes, they are under more pressure than anyone but man they are not shy about taking it out on subordinates
-no room for learning on the job or screwing up, as soon as you show up on a ship you're expected to be able to do the job you were hired for even if its your first time
All that said after a while it kind of gets in your blood, everyone's miserable a lot of the time when they're on the ship but once you get off you can't wait to go back out again. There's just something about the sea that's really special.
oh and forgot to mention that as a sailor you're also a firefighter, since if there's a fire at sea you can't just call 911, you have to deal with it yourself
so you get to do firefighting drills every week which are always fun
