To explain the context of the American gun debate to Europeans, the pro-gun side seems so intractable because gun rights have slowly been eroded throughout the 20th century. The problem is the "reasonable compromise" suggested by gun-control groups almost always means giving up some of your gun rights in exchange for keeping the rest. After the assault weapons ban in 1994 people realized it was better to stand up and oppose any "compromise" rather than slide down a slippery slope.
