Memories of a Murder

It was pretty bad honestly. Way too long for such a simple storyline. The scenes with the cannibals added absolutely nothing and was total filler. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is still the top Korean thriller to this day.

No need for petty insults anon. The movie became total shit because it hinges on the protagonist being in control the entire time. The one or two times the antagonist had control feel incredibly forced as a result.

Memories of Murder, City of God, New World, Gommorah, the man from nowhere

Memories of Murder and City of God are two of the best movies I've ever seen foreign or otherwise.
>>
>>70949335
I agree really. All of those movies are fairly mediocre and unmemorable, besides maybe Oldboy but that movie's just as good as Se7en if that.

J.S.A - women will never understand this movie
>>
>>70949390
I really don't. I love Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, which is probably the most popular Korean thriller of all time besides Oldboy. I Saw the Devil is a bland revenge movie, hampered by its obscene running time and fairly boring characters. It was good to see that actor playing against type as the killer, but nothing else.
>>
>>70949368
korean cinema is basically Hollywood 2. it's all /b/ tier dog shit. it gives plebs the ability to say they've seen foreign films and allows them to keep the same type of enjoyment they get from blockbusters

I've watched 'artistic' movies by fags like tarkovsky and theyre just boring and awful. It's not that I don't have the attention span for it, I read long non-YA books all the time. Artsy movies are usually just awful, and even if they weren't the shit in my post would still be good. pretending to like film as an art is so low effort and pathetic. Ok, you sat down in front of a screen for 7 hours and watched polish people be miserable, youre such a fucking intellectual. New /tv/ is cancer with all the capeshit, but you wannabe film buffs are so much worse. You unironicly think that watching pretentious nonsense makes you better than other people. Literally rape yourself in the throat.

I'm not going to pretend I've loved every ponderous arthouse film I've seen (Winter Sleep, most Haneke films, and Satantango were terrible to me) but I will not dismiss the entire canon because of this.

oh man you're the kind of person to like Ulysses too aren't you. By like I mean stumble through(if you even bother to finish it) and then start talking about how genius and moving it was, just so you look like you have some taste. Ulysses is trash no matter how much you know about literature. Joyce peaked with dubliners, Portrait was on the edge of masturbatory trash. Ulyyses and the Meme were fucking abysmal and deep down you know it.

Pynchon is the epitome of inauthenticity in literature. He is a very cunning imitator of authentic art, so that, superficially, Pynchon's penny dreadfuls look like great works of art. And the unthinking will consider themselves ''connoisseurs'' for liking this inauthentic trash disguised as great art, and will happily pat themselves on their backs.

tired of people who think these threads are the place to show off how obscure the movies they watch and label everything else as entry level/pleb trash. Every time theres any reccomendation thread on /tv/, which is like 1 in a 1000 capeshit and shitpost threads, someone like you, some criterion cretin who probably thinks that hes somehow edifying everyone by shitting on the movies they like or recommending them arthouse cancer, comes in and shits on it. isn't there a /film/ or something now? tv is not the place to try to be intellectual, maybe there's a subreddit that would fit what you're trying to do, you should go there.

Ironically, you posted that picture while calling me a "criterion cretin". You're a walking meme, kid. No way.
They know their market(s), they sell to them.
Occasionally it means you get a really nice home video release of a film you actually like.
Let's be honest, if you work/study in any kind of humanities/creative field then Criterion is a really good canon to go through, for no other reason than to understand what the fuck people are on about. Sort of like how in every subject, whether Accounting, Physics, or Literature you have to do that "theory" or "history of..." subject to understand the movements/fashions of the discipline up until and including the present day.

Versus, its a zombie action comedy
its not the best movie, but its entertaining as fuck
the director did one short before it, and had hard enough time getting this one made, so he viewed it as both his first and his last movie, and threw all the shit he wanted to into it. when it became a cult hit, he got the cast and crew back together to refilm shit that had to be cut and upgrade some of the shittier effects from the first version
he was the director of Midnight Meat Train, and versus is literally on his youtube channel for free so more people can watch it
>>
>>70950503
But they are!
How many TV commercials I see nowadays that are blatant rip offs of Wes An. If you're in that industry you need to know the provenance.

>>70950670
Wes anderson didn't invent symmetry and bold colors
>>
>>70950714
That's why you need to go through the provenance from Wes, to Goddard, to MGM musicals, all the way up to Méliès.

I dunno. I still think there are worse things to happen to 'cinema' than Criterion. It's a repository of film language, some of it shit, and a small slither of it masterful
>>
Disgusting thread
>>
>>70950132

The thing is you're coming as a pretentious piece of shit because you watch a myriad of weird films that the rest of the world gives two fucks about.

Nobody cares. Shut the fuck up. It doesn't make your intellectual level any higher than anyone else in this thread that has probably all seen anywhere from 700+ on up other fucking movies.

You searched for a 'movie', you sat down, you watched it, and because it contains the compartmentalized goblin-given category 'foreign film' that somehow puts you in a class higher than others?

ok

honestly there arent that many good foreign films so i just wrote down all i could think of that hadnt already been mentioned

the best movies in the list imo are probably

and

elling, kopps, klovn and trollhunter are comedies, all scandinavian

the raid is probably the best action movie ive ever seen, asian ofcourse

headhunters, max manus, 1944, arn, hamilton and the democratic terrorist are surprisingly good action movies

>>

wow

well, you kind of misunderstood what i meant. there arent THAT MANY good foreign films, but some of the best movies ive ever seen have been foreign

you see, in europe when people make movies it's usually for the sake of art, not for the sake of profit. hollywood probably makes 100 times as many movies as all of europe combined, but 90% of those movies are adam sandler tier flicks and steven seagal tier action movies

those few good european movies that i mentioned are gems that ought to be treasured because honestly they are far better than your american capeshit movies and adam sandler flicks
>>
>>70951619
>but 90% of those movies are adam sandler tier flicks and steven seagal tier action movies

There's a few of those, but the 90s are for the most part over. A lot of your cliche shit movies are chic flicks, and there are some good love movies that appear from time to time.

pfft. Hamilton is the Roland Emmerich of F1.
Wide appeal but just irritating in every way and deserving only a iota of his success.

Rosberg is the Winding Refn, underappreciated. Scandinavian cool.
Never really gotten a chance to break through.

Vettel is the Xavier Dolan. Good but has had way too much luck from way too young.

You're being stupid. Criterion is all about quality of release. The amount of extras they include, plus the care they put into color correction and what not is absurd. They also will release films that have rarely seen release, and even remaster films that have only been released in terrible quality.

I will admit though, they've gone somewhat downhill because of whatever encoding error they have that they refuse to acknowledge. Mulholland Drive unfortunately suffered because of it.
