There's no doubt about this one. John Wayne replaced by the next legend, and he's still going strong.

He's a movie STAR. Those don't exist anymore.
I cannot conjure up a single name that is even on John Wayne's level of stardom that has appearing in the last fifteen years. The closest are Will Smith and Tom Hanks and even they aren't even close. I'd say it's mostly beacuse audiences are just too wise to how the media is these days. Some might say cynical. It just seems childish to imagine any actor as larger than life. This isn't a discussion about acting talent (we all know there are some seriously talented actors out there) but a matter of just being interesting at all times.
Though there is Clint Eastwood. That guy is just plain interesting no matter what career he chooses. I live in LA and see certain people (at the Grove or whatever) and usually the only thing that crosses my mind is, "They look so short off camera" while in the case of Clint Eastwood the only thing I though was "Holy crap that's Clint Eastwood."

This....There's not really any that exist anymore.
Westerns were being produced like hot cakes, or dime store books. There's not really any of those being produced nowadays, because there's only a dozen or so big studios and they don't produce small budget films similar to what Wayne starred in
Who's that guy that's been on all the NCIS shows? Maybe him

Clooney is kinda the closest thing we have to an old Hollywood star anymore. Except that he can actually act and has a bit of range.
John Wayne very rarely played roles that weren't "John Wayne plays John Wayne dressed up as _____ character." He butchered some real historical roles just to mold them into a means of channeling his personal political beliefs. I don't know of any big name actor today who so shamelessly does this kinda thing.
