How come there has never been a decent video game adaptation?
Are they just a lower art forms?

Video games just don't translate well.
I imagine if a REALLY good director decided to adapt games with good writing to begin with, it would be great.
Fallout New Vegas comes to find, there's enough good dialogue in here for a great film.
A movie set in the Deus Ex: Human Revolution-era world would sell like hotcakes.

Movies don't do a good game justice. They don't replicate the same experience.
You could watch tons of movies about Chess or Monopoly, Dungeons&Dragons or Metal Gear Solid but it doesn't beat actually playing a game of it.

ehhh. Theres some pretty enjoyable video game adaptions, I would easily call them decent, even good, not great though obviously.
Everyone I've talked to thats seen Warcraft really enjoyed it, both warcraft fans and people who know nothing about warcraft. I'm waiting until the bluray, which will hopefully include 40 minutes that the studio forced the director to cut.
DOOM isn't particularily good but it was pretty entertaining.
Resident Evil 1 and 2 are pretty enjoyable, the entries after though are god awful.
Super Mario Bros is awful, but its so awful you can genuinely enjoy the movie.
Theres actually a lot of video game universes that would translate spectacularly into a movie, problem is it requires a skilled writer that would cherish the source material and understand what makes it special.
Also, the Mortal Kombat movies.. I fucking loved those as a kid, Street Fighter too, yeah, they were bad, but they were still awesome at the same time.
