Does anyone else feel like D&D could have been tragic ASOIAF characters themselves?
Think about it- They start off young and idealistic, talking about how they're going to single-handedly adapt their favorite book series and become a hugely popular TV show, despite having very little experience in screenwriting.
They train under their idol, GRRM, and he helps them develop the show and it gains popularity, just as they wanted.
But over time, outside forces start to compromise their vision. The network wants them to shoehorn in meme humor to appeal to a wider audience. All their new writers want to inject their own vision into it, making the next seasons wildly inconsistent in tone and quality. Their mentor, GRRM, leaves the project in their hands so he can work alone on his books.
And they begin to cut corners. It starts out perfectly justifiable- they don't have the budget or the time for some scenes. But they start to enjoy this new freedom to change the story how they want. They begin changing characters and plots just for the hell of it, or because of their own personal biases.
Soon their project is completely unrecognizable from the source material, and they slowly realize it's become generic network garbage. They turn to GRRM for guidance, but he's put off by what they did to his story. They are out of material and turn to cheap shock tactics and cheesey "badass" moments to keep their audience, all the while knowing it's hollow inside.
And the saddest irony? They got exactly what they wanted- one of the most popular programs in television history. But somewhere along the way they lost their artistic integrity and love for the series.

Do you think Viserys and Robert's death had some planning from beyond the shadows? Things seemed pretty stable in Westeros until after Ned is killed but they had things going wrong economically. I'm guessing he planned for everything to go the way it is so Aegon could come in at the right moment and reclaim everything, making him look like a hero or some mythic figure in the process.
Though the most interesting thing about this is how these two figures both wanted war badly but got killed.
