Why did they remove trial by combat? Did they do this on purpose to tell us they're not doing Clegane bowl on the show? Or are they trying to surprise us with cleganebowl?

Since Cersei's trial by combat is not possible now, what's the point of the Hound even being alive at this point?
at least before the latest episode, he was out for revenge.
Then he got that revenge literally before half the episode was even done.
So, what will he do now?
