I'm starting to think more and more that we should've supported Gamergate more. That was the main movement against fraudulent "reviews" being sold and posted online. Video gaming is a bigger industry than film. A widely publicised review of a game can influence the movement of tens of millions of dollars. It can make or break entire video games companies, thousands of people's careers can hang in the balance when a popular online gaming site reviews a game.
Blatant and unapologetic corruption in this field is not a non-issue for people who's livelihoods are at stake, or for gamers who want unbiased advice on which $60 game to buy. Or for people who see a wider issue here and are concerned that this corruption, if tolerated, might lead to widespread covert advertisement in forums like 4chan's /tv/ board.
But those complaining about it have to shut up because a female games reviewer got some nasty tweets, right? Who cares about impartiality in reviews that affect the $91 billion video games industry when a woman's feelings have been hurt?

Gamergate had a good premise - people with an agenda and/or personal gain, potentially from pushing said agenda - are shitting up people's interests. The response went in the wrong direction in a lot of ways - honestly if as much effort went into organising alternatives to the existing monolith then maybe it would have succeeded.
Unfortunately right wing nutters got involved and caused the movement to blow up from within. Thanks /pol/ for fucking up another force for change.

The pedo stuff has been here forever. The rest of us always just ignored it because it acted as a barrier to the board becoming popular and shite. People take one look and run, which in the past meant we could chill in relative peace.
Then Gamergate and The Fappening happened, and that brought hordes of newfags in and also got the attention of SJWs who feel the need to police the internet. There's always the possibility that the movement was deliberately sabotaged by that kind of posting. There are examples of people being caught false-flagging Gamergate as misogynists.
One way to make your opposition lose sympathy is to infiltrate it (not hard on 4chan), and then start blaming the Jews for everything with a straight face. You can then point to your own shit and claim it represents the entire movement you want to discredit. Every single criticism can now be met with "but you're an anti-semite/misogynist!" It's a tactic as old as time.

You're absolutely right about an alternative being a better way to go. When Gamergate discussion was censored on 4chan (rightly or wrongly), 4*4chan was established for Gamergate discussion. It's now a pretty huge board.
