This is always hilarious.
The Bible says to give voluntarily.
It doesn't say to pull out a gun and put it to someone else's head until they have given an amount you deem "adequate".

Colbert is a Catholic. And he's right there.

I am a Catholic, like Colbert, and I say FUCK this country.

It was founded by atheists; deists were basically atheists back in the day. It was founded by atheists, and it was also founded by slave-owners. Who could own another human being as property and still claim to be a Christian? All 'Christian' slave-owners are the Devil's own soldiers.

Time and time again the United States has acted against the interests of Christianity. It has thwarted the Church of Rome, the one true Church. It has actively persecuted those fighting for the oppressed, whom Christ loves. Its economic system, unrestrained capitalism, hates the poor and the lowly, the treasures of the Church.

So fuck the United States. God curse the United States. May Christ break the United States like Bane breaking Batman. May Jesus Christ, the Son of God who is God, bring this whole rotten country low, and may all who serve it suffer in his name. Amen.

>Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.’

>And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”

>And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. “Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied. “Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh. “Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man! Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets. “But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.

>And he answered them, “Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.”

>He said also to the man who had invited him, “When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid. But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”

I encourage you to rehearse your speech about the technical exemptions you believe a statutory tax system provides. Maybe Jesus will buy it.

If someone believes himself a good Christian it's up to him how much he helps the community and the less fortunate.

What Colbert wants to do is tax you 60% or 70% to fuel inept government bureaucracy. Obamacare for example is a disaster from start to finish, and you don't know how your money gets spent to topple governments and create chaos around the world

Or are we? If Colbert doesn't take it literally, and takes no part of it literally, then he's not being hypocritical. Not that any of you are here to actually think about this issue, but I figured I would contribute this:

https://speeches.byu.edu/talks/ezra-taft-benson_vision-hope-youth-zion/

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints believe that in the end everything God has blessed us with belongs to Him. We believe that when we are all righteous enough we will live by the law of consecration, where all things are commonly owned by the church and distributed according to needs.

Even so, many church leaders continue to take aggressive stances against welfare and socialist policies (not that I am equating the two). The difference is man's liberty to choose. When I pay taxes, I have no control over where that money goes. Certainly if a beggar is before me, I cannot claim that I can judge whether or not he is worthy of my aid- only God can do that, and He has been clear time and time again on the fact that I should give all that I have. I follow this pattern in my personal life: I give time, money and food to those that are in need.

But to claim that I must back the "generosity" of a faceless bureaucracy because I believe in giving loses the meaning behind the commandment to give. When I do this, I abdicate my love for and responsibility towards my fellow man, choosing instead to let the government take care of it. Not only do I lose out on the blessing of being able to help someone around me, the entire world loses out on the sense of community that would come as a result. The givers and the receivers become more and more separated from each other and entitlement grows while the love of man waxes cold.

>>
>>70881907
If you're already giving to charity, then you don't have to worry about giving to bureaucrats. It becomes a write-off.
>>
>>70881818
You get state and local taxes taken directly out of your paycheck. Then you pay taxes on goods, like you were saying with some sin taxes being very high.

Dont forget that companies build in the cost of their taxes into goods. And dont forget the companies build in the cost of taxes for their wages for the stores you buy your goods in, or for the consumables they use for transporting those goods.

Everything is taxed, and it adds up in the end with the number being around 35% of every single dollar the average american spends. Its even worse in places like Chicago where they have the highest sales tax in the country.

actually Jesus Christ agreed in giving taxes
Mark 12: 16 - 17

16So they brought it, and He asked them, “Whose likeness is this? And whose inscription?” “Caesar’s,” they answered. 17Then Jesus told them, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” And they marveled at Him.

Apostle Paul also reiterated that we have to abide by the government rules so long it doesn't go against God's laws

Romans 13: 1- 7

1Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which is from God. The authorities that exist have been appointed by God. 2Consequently, the one who resists authority is opposing what God has set in place, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

3For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but bad. Do you want to be unafraid of the one in authority? Then do what is right, and you will have his approval. 4For he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not carry the sword in vain. He is God’s servant, an agent of retribution to the wrongdoer.

5Therefore, it is necessary to submit to authority, not only to avoid punishment, but also as a matter of conscience. 6This is also why you pay taxes. For the authorities are God’s servants, who devote themselves to their work. 7Pay everyone what you owe him: taxes to whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due.

>It's actual just a direct refutation of your argument.

My argument is that largely unregulated local churches (all churches in America are counted as charities) may not represent the most effective use of charitable giving. Many small churches, I aver, are 'charities' in name only. The function of this type of 'charity' is ministry: You put money in one end and you get sermons out the other.

Of course they have no bearing, it's up to every person to do as they see fit. There's no such thing as a christian nation. What I do think is that people who are rich an are against the poor having better opportunities in life because that would somehow have an impact on their wealth shouldn't think of themselves as christians or followers of any kind of faith besides money and greed.

You really think people place emphasis on the same issues equally? There are single issues voters that couldn't give a shit about anything else. There are people that have views that differ from their party but vote based on what's important to them. They can vote for another party but that just splits the party and gives the other side a win every time.

You can judge them but the same measure will be used against you

Matthew 7: 1 - 3

7 Judge not, that ye be not judged.

2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

What's your point? I'm not a Christian, and Colbert doesn't seem to be claiming that Christians should sell all their possessions. He's charging many other Christians in America with hypocrisy: They avow themselves Christian and invoke that Christianity in furtherance of stupid shit like opposing gay marriage and giving way too many fucks about which bathrooms people use etc, so we know their Christianity is part of their political identity, but they neglect their Christian duty to the poor.

Jesus' commandments were only brought up because the retard squad ITT expressed skepticism towards the idea that Christianity and charitable giving at least purported to have some nominal overlap.

I became a euphoric atheist when I realized Christians don't actually practice their religion the way Jesus taught. You're supposed to detach yourself from material possessions. Christians are supposed to be modest and not brag about their good deeds. You're supposed to help the needy, even the needy you don't like. You're supposed to unconditionally love your neighbours. Christians don't do any of this shit. Instead they try to find a loophole that gets themselves out of the responsibility of actually following Jesus' teachings.

The intention behind my argument was to debate just that-- my point is that any policy that makes something compulsory that is only truly effective when it is voluntary is an ineffective policy by definition.

When we are confronted with a system that is failing, our solution should be to encourage the individuals involved to do what is right and what is responsible, not to adopt their responsibilities. You cannot claim that a policy that replaces accountability to God with accountability to the state is a Christian policy.

That being said, I'm sure the quality of living is a lot better now that than when Jesus was around, so maybe the welfare state has something going for it.
