People don't realise that it isn't enough for big hollywood blockbusters to make some profit. They have to make a good profit.
If you employ 1000 people to work on a film and it takes 2 years to make, you don't want all that work, all that hassle, plus the risk element to it, in order to make 50m profit on a 300m investment.
Not only that, you only get to release 1-2 blockbusters at most every 6 months, you could have put out a film that made $300m profit on the same investment instead.

As sort of an experiment, I showed some of my female friends the trailer of this movie and they were not interestedbecause it's an action movie and most women are likely never going to enjoy action movies
This movie will not JUST fail because they ruined the original (which I'm sure most people outside of the US haven't even seen) but because they took something for men and stubbornly tried to turn it into something women should be interested in.
