>tfw Dune will never get a proper movie adaption like LOTR did
>even if production started it would likely be dropped again
>even if it DID come out, it'd likely flop either because A. they didn't put a lot of work into it because they knew it would tank or B. audiences just don't care about a new series

It hurts
>>
It would be insanely difficult to adapt Dune to even a 3 1/2 hour movie. There's just too much. Lynch and Jodorowski both tried and failed. It needs to be a series, HBO is the only one I trust to give it the budget it needs but then it's too slow and paced for the average TV watcher to appreciate.

It'll never happen though. Maybe it's better that way.
>>
It's not a very good story.
>>
Dune is one of the few stores that, meme buzzwords aside, still feels "epic" to me. I don't think any modern movie could do it justice and wouldn't somehow just diminish it and turn it into a disposable action flick for popcorn audiences.

>The only planet that was spared the raging fire of Muad'Dib's Jihad was the home world of House Atreides, Caladan. Lady Jessica, mother of Paul Muad'Dib, refused the Fremen any access to the planet, including religious pilgrimage.
>The Jihad ended in 10206 AG. Because planetary romance is and always has been a trash genre.
The only reason Avatar made it so big was because "muh IMAX" and "muh next gen graphics". No one really gives a shit about blue space cat Pochahontas shit.
If they just time skip the entire book of Atreides arriving on Arrakis and bum fucking around the desert establish his jihadis so the audience can be presented with the space opera side of Dune, then it might be attractive.
But that would lead to a huge knowledge gap.
>>
>>70856762
How about this
Forget all about the bene gesserit subplot and all that shit.
Just make it paul atreides, a noble in exile after his dad is killed and palace invaded, rallies the native fremen to get revenge on his archenemies the harkonnen and the scheming emperor by using sandworms.
Cue in love story, blah blah, some liet kynes environmentalism blah blah blah, you have a blockbuster

I think they'll make a Dune trilogy a la LOTR, but it'll just cover the main dune story, not the godworm / sequel stuff.

Personally I think Dune already has a great adaptation in the mini-series. some people have this irrational hatred towards it for reasons I don't understand aside from nitpicks like the CG looks a little dated. Otherwise it has huge amazing sets, great use of colour, imaginative art direction / costume design / choreography, it's well cast with differing accents which a ten thousand year empire spanning the universe would have. If anyone wants to watch Dune, then just watch this, preferably the Director's Cut to see Chani's big titties.
>>

its praised because paul isn't a superbadass, hes actually a pretty huge shit, and comes to realize how huge a shit he is/was, and how his realization of how huge a shit he was doesn't stop the shit he sets into motion. But how huge a shit he is is nothing compared to how huge a shit everyone else is. How bad shit could've been had he been the exact type of shit the people who made him wanted him to be.

His basic argument is any act of true love/passion has to be rape. Not "I waited till you passed out then stuck my dick in you" rape, but "I couldn't restrain myself and fought you to the ground, tore off your clothes, and fucked you like a whore in a public place, damn the consequences" rape.

>>
>>70868890

>>
>>70868697
It wasn't so much that they ran out of source material, they just chose to either 1) cut out the characters and sub plots of some stories and rush through them, of which Dany's story is easily the worst offender in the early seasons, and still even now and 2) they either muck it up by having characters doing things that don't make sense for them to do (Littlefinger giving Sansa to Ramsay instead of just doing the entire Winterfell story from the books that could have easily lasted a season). So it's a mess of fan fiction and poorly thought out decisions that have made it a mess where people say 'oh they're running out of material'.

Well no shit, they took huge universe within the books alone (never mind the expanded lore from AWoIAF) and decided to ignore most of it to push Dany's story forward. Season 1 was close to being a masterpiece despite some of the small changes. Small changes are acceptable. But as a series go on, they ALWAYS veer too far from the material on HBO. One need not even look at GoT for this, but True Blood as the largest example. The entire fae subplot dropped shortly after being introduced, Zombie Vampires in the last season??? Bill becoming Lillith????

The first and second books could probably be adapted tolerably well but the third gets a bit introverted and woo woo and God-Emperor, the payoff for everything before it and easily one of the best science fiction novels ever, is basically a five-hundred page character study slash civics essay. Heretics and Chapterhouse are basically an extended epilogue showing that the power of love keeps the Golden Path moving.

Also the whole pseudo-muslim thing and the fact that pretty much all of the main characters are white would ensure that it would never emerge from planning intact because people on all sides of the aisle would go ape - muslims would go nuts because it's very clearly not muh islam, conservatives would go nuts because it "glorifies religious extremism" and the left would screech about muh cultural appropriation and muh whitewashing - and if they changed it, the fans would get upset and it would have no legitimacy.

Just let it go, man.

cite reasons why the miniseries isn't good in your opinion. here's my reasons it is good...

Huge sets
Imaginative art design / costume design / choreography
Theatrical use of color & lighting
Great cast of seasoned veterans
Coherent narrative
>>
>>70875713
Dunno, but the well of "epic" adaptations is running dry and because Hollywood is creatively bankrupt (remember Jupiter Ascending? Me neither.) they're going to have to start branching out to survive but it's just going to be more of the same, fitting whatever polyhedron they bet on through a round hole.
>>
>>70875850
>Huge sets
One or two decent sets. The rest were dogshit. Like one time they're looking over a sand dune at night with a photo of more dunes behind them that's obviously taken during the day.
99% of the sets were tiny and bland.
>Imaginative art design / costume design
Not near as much as Lynch's.
>choreography
At what? The fights? No. Just no.
>Theatrical use of color & lighting
Yeah, sure. As in a junior college theater department's use of color and lighting.
>Great cast of seasoned veterans
Like who? You have John Hurt and literally no one else of note.
>Coherent narrative
Yes, they could read the book. That's not a huge point in their favor.

The book practically beat you over the head with foreshadowing of Leto's death, so it's appropriate.

Unless LSD makes a really big comeback we're never gonna get another good movie.
A ton of great movies only got made because there were directors able to convey trippy voidspace concepts to audiences, and now we're left with a generation of people NOT changed by LSD. Atleast we have Nolan and Refn.

It was mostly cocaine causing people to greenlight basically everything that came across their lap. As cocaine makes you feel great about everything.

I think execs are willing to greenlight trippy shit now, look at rick and morty, and the rest of adult swim. While yeah, I'm sure that was a factor in how some things got made back then (anyone with the last name DeLaurentis had to be holding), the source material is trippy voidstuff, and I love it.

I wouldn't call rick and morty zero budget, it's a bit of a runaway hit for them. The fact that these shows exist at all show that someone is in the business of making TV for people getting high on their couch.
The trippy shit is leaking, and I for one welcome our new void people overlords.

Fuck of pretentious lit fag. You should have died betrayed by your own kind in Orlando. Dune breaks many grounds in sci fi and hugely influenced the written and film sci fi industry. The Dune world is intricate and believable. The characters unlike what you meme texted, don't exist in vacuum. They exist as a consequence of their history and what they do have consequences too. Dune weaves a tale of the heroes journey weaved with politics and religion, set in a fantastic but believable ecology of Arrakis. It is sci fi for the thinking man. Not fags like you.

>How about HBO Adapts another poltical science fiction with an epic feel to it like Red Mars

IMO, the Mars quadrilogy is the 2nd best sci-fi story ever, after Dune.

But again as we've seen with GoT, HBO would just fuck it up as every producer/director/showrunner nowadays is incapable of actually _adapting_ a story and all feel the need to put their own retarded "stamp" on the production, by fucking up the story six-ways-to-Sunday.

Kim Stanley Robinson would have to hold the line (unlike GRRM...) and be prepared to tell them to fuck right off, when they demand to twist the story into unrecognizable trash.

Personally, I'd have more faith in NetFlix adapting the Mars quadrilogy. Fuck HBO, they've become nothing but a pay-cable version of AMC.

I'd also suggest that due to the time frame of the story and the need for gee-wiz settings, it would be better to do it as an high quality CGI series, along the lines of Avatar.

If you think of the fremen as noble savages you clearly didn't understand the book. They're nulkitsnt jihadist extremists who subjugate most of the galaxy. You're also missing the nuances of the plot's statements of the importance of ecology and the disagvantwges of monopolies
>>
>>70860448
Fucking this, but I don't think I trust anyone to do it proper justice. Even HBO would dumb it down too much. Maybe a 4-5 movie series would be acceptable
>>
I feel like I'm pretty well read and pretty open minded but Dune was one of the only books I bring myself to finish.

I get why people may like it. It establishes this distant alien culture pretty well, but a little too well for me. I had no connection to any of it, not in the world or the characters. I read shit written a couple thousand years ago that felt way more relatable
>>
>>70884871
meant to say I couldnt bring myself to finish
>>
>>70856782
I was thinking about this and you could be correct. What is interesting about Dune isn't exactly what happens. It's more about Paul's perspective. Without the introspection I can imagine Paul coming off as quite a boring character.
>>
>>70884871
I understand what you mean. It all seems very calculated.

This

Dune has an interesting atmosphere and draws together interesting elements
The narrative is cobbled together from even then tired cliches and one dimensional characters
You read it to see scifi, fantasy, mysticism, environmentalism, and psychedelia brought together, you read it on a sunny afternoon with a joint and go 'woah man, those worms'
