MOON BATTLE

20 years after the first invasion, the United Nations have created the Earth Space Defense (ESD), a united global defense program that uses weapons reverse-engineered from leftover alien technology to protect Earth from further extraterrestrial incursions.
ESD Director David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) travels to Africa to investigate an alien destroyer that has become active again and learns it was drilling into Earth's core and sent a distress call to Space. Shortly afterwards, a spaceship emerges from a wormhole near ESD's headquarters on the Moon, and despite Levinson's warnings that the technology doesn't resemble the aliens, President Elizabeth Lanford (Sela Ward) has it shot down.
Levinson recruits rebellious pilot Jake Morrison (Liam Hemsworth) to help him investigate the ship, and in their absence the aliens return in a massive warship, the Harvester, and destroy ESD's headquarters, with the sole survivors being a group of pilots led by Captain Dylan Hiller (Jessie Usher). The aliens then launch an attack on planet Earth.
Former President Thomas Whitmore (Bill Pullman), who is still telephatically linked to the aliens, is taken to Area 51 by his daughter, ex-pilot Patricia Whitmore (Maika Monroe), who is in a relationship with Morrison, and learns from the captive aliens that their race is led by a queen that telepathically controls the armada and plans to drain Earth's core to fuel their ship, and that humanity was 12 hours to stop them.
Levinson disables the Harvester's energy shield so the ESD pilots can launch an offensive, but the Alien Queen antecipates their actions and lures them into a trap, destroying their jets once they infiltrate the Harvester and killing all but Hiller, Morrison and Rain (Angelababy).
The Harvester then begins drilling into the planet's core, while Lanford is kidnapped and brought before the Alien Queen, who kills Lanford for refusing to submit to the invaders.
Whitmore's visions confirm Levinson's suspicions that the downed ship was not part of the invasion, and reveal that the Alien Queen is searching for a sphere hidden within, which Levinson retrieves, communicating with the shared consciousness of an alien race whose planet was destroyed by the invaders, and that is now assembling a resistance to fight back, and wants the humans to lead them. The sphere must be protected so the Alien Queen doesn't learn the location of the Resistance's headquarters.
Levinson lures the Alien Queen into a trap to capture a ship with a decoy sphere filled with explosives, and Whitmore sacrifices himself to detonate the bombs, but the Alien Queen survives and commands her armada to attack Area 51. Hiller, Morrison and Rain manage to steal alien warships and join the battle, destroying the Alien Queen's biomechanical armor. Levinson then beheads the Queen with a commandeered school bus, causing the entire armada to collapse and the Harvester to retreat into Space.
In the aftermath, Morrison is reunited with Patricia, while Levison enlists the human race in the Resistance and announces their plans to launch an offensive on the invaders' homeworld.

Emmerich said at one point he'd wanted to incorporate wormhole tech into the new movies. I'd bet dollars to donuts that this "experiment" is a back door to either wormhole tech and or Will coming back.
