TV shows have a lot of barriers before they get on air. Usually the writing is best in the first season because of this. Then it starts to fall apart because none of it is preconceived. It's all based on ratings and whether or not they get green lit for additional seasons.
The majority of shows will just keep pumping out episodes until they reach the point in which it's not profitable to do so anymore (usually a mix between higher production costs and lower ratings).
