Just watched the pilot for Twin Peaks. Don't know what all the hype is all about, it seems like a regular police show other than it's longer than 1 hour.

Yeah, you're way off the mark there, son. If you like surrealism and small town mysteries, stick around. If not, it just isn't for you.

The weird shit starts in episode 2.

What fucking police shows do you watch? Twin Peaks is extremely surrealistic.

if you still have that feeling after ep3 then stop watching and kys

Twin Peaks became a meme show some time in the last few years. Probably because of netflix. The millennial vaporwave crowd eat it up and use it as a kind of fashion statement.

Some men in suits became aware of the neo-fandom and decided to bring it back to wring a few last reddit dollars out of this brand name.

The surreal scenes are all this show has going for it and they are few and far between. 95% of the time you are just watching a shit soap opera, that's apparently a parody of shit soap operas, yet for all intents and purposes indistinguisable from the real thing.

If you showed the peaks babbies any other crap television show of that sort from the era and told them Lynch was responsible they'd be falling over themselves to declare it amazing satire, another Lynch masterpiece.

Basically what you need to understand about Twin Peaks is that it's too difficult for most people. Difficult as in artistically complex in a deceptively simple way, which you're not going to pick up on unless you have a background knowledge of cinematic tropes and you're constantly paying attention to the camerawork and visual flourishes. A lot of people watching it are expecting plot, resolutions, and sterile tension, and when they get greeted with melodrama, psychoanalytic symbolism, and spiritual malaise, they're often too unfamiliar with modes of film and thought to understand what's happening, so they sneer.

Twin Peaks is not a television show. It's not the same repetitive exchange of shots repeated ad nauseum as friendly characters banter and middle-aged white male antiheroes glower episode to episode. It's cinema being delivered in the television format, with antiheroes being not reduced but inflated into caricatures and the dialogue being dipped in sincere tones of fantastical insight. Its genius lies primarily in its appreciation for tropes and cliches, which it incorporates into a dreamlike symphony, resulting in a series of profound statements and disturbing images that are genuinely revolting in their instinctual familiarity to the viewer.

There's no attention given to the high schooler who thinks emotions are gay and wants irony and gore; he can go jerk off to Tarantino. Honest statements on anxiety and love are delivered in absolute corny sincerity, but with the craft and the visual skill to give these thoughts legitimacy and power. Goofy and incongruous characters are placed side by side and asked to interact, to engage, to determine a higher truth, and often they even succeed. It's not a satire of soap operas, it's a parody, and a very positive one at that. The mood of the program is undeniably perfect, and floats from comedy to dread to awe with masterful skill

It's simple the best American television program ever produced

So would you say you have to have an appreciation for the technical aspect of filming to like this show?
>>
>>70832522
No, the weird shit starts in the pilot. If OP didn't realize, that's too bad.

Not sure of pasta but the second season goes off the rails. The first is pretty magical though. It has a humanity to it that most writer/directors don't even aspire to include in whatever they're making. The characters are vulnerable people, you don't really get that in any other show.
