What are some of the greatest movie shots?
Don't need to be iconic, just great looking.
Post them.

Have you ever noticed that during this shot, the view is angled such that the ground and the sky are perfectly even in the frame? What did Nolan mean by this? Let me tell you.
They're not balancing for CIA alone. Nolan is using natural symbolism to show the moral dichotomy between CIA and Bane. CIA's lofty aspirations towards achieving law, order and justice (the sky) are being challenged by the dirty reality of Bane's life in the shadows (the ground). At the beginning of the movie, of this divine confrontation, the forces are in balance but that quickly changes. Bane crashing CIA's plane, a physical metaphor for his principles, from Heaven to the Earth shows Bane's initial victory for darkness. Bruce Wayne therefore becomes the inheritor of CIA's spirit as he finds himself stuck in the Pit, a location deep within the Earth, where the light had been sent to die. But Batman overcomes that, rises from the Earth, and defeats Bane, and is last seen in his own plane, the same physical metaphor that CIA had. Whereas CIA was crashed to the Earth, Batman flew off into Heaven therefore showing that morality and justice still have a place in the world. CIA probably smiled down on him
>>70830411
>b-b-but it looks just like in the comics
>>70830411
>>70832055
That's the thing with Snyder, he can make REALLY pretty shots, good movies not so much.
>>70832055
It's even worse because the comics never did anything that trite.

So I want to 'get' cinematography, did you guys all study it or can i get the jist of it after a few hours of reading on the internet?
Cause it seems like there's a lot of objectivism and understanding to it as opposed to just 'this looks pretty'

>>70831148
Not really "artsy" in that there's a bunch of obscure symbolism and stuff. Just very amazing visuals. Everything has a psychedelic, drugged-out, dreamlike feel to it, and the camerawork is really cool. Hard to really describe, people either love it or think it's self-indulgent because there's not that much of a plot.
>>70831148
Really unique visuals, imagine being half-awake and on mushrooms as you float around Tokyo in the middle of the night
>>70831148
It rides the fine line between spectacular and trash. I never really get more than halfway through it.
>>70832471
By 'get' do you mean learn how to do it yourself in your films?

No, just understanding what makes it good or bad, how to interpret shots. Being able to critique and discuss it as an artform, the same way you can learn to interpret symbolism and poetry

yeah awesome. I like they the scene ended with their heads disappearing from the shot. I like to think that Dennis Villeneuve is anal about that sort of thing. Some directors would shout cut and thats it.

>>70836110
This isn't a shot in the movie. The real shot is just the tie fighters and the sun, no Rey or BB-8
Best shot from the most beautiful movie of all time

I've never been unable to convince people this was literally a painting. Fucking magnificent

I liked it...as I love sleeze. However, I can't lie, and had to FF through the panning shots. I lasted a few, but it got really old for me.

"Not the bees!!"
I've been wrestling with which one is better for years now. Just saw the cut where bees scene and some of the other really bizarre stuff was taken out.
Gives it a little more of a spooky vibe, but thought the full unrated version is better...just for the laughs.

I was luck and saw 2001 with my Dad in the 70's (around 10 or so). Because the human brain wasn't saturated with CGI (and they actually put money into production) this shit was like fucking porn. You simply couldn't look away.

Do we all agree that cinematography is the determining factor of what makes a movie great? Story and character are obviously important as well but great cinematography can redeem even the shittiest plots and make the movie at least okay.
ANY shot from Lotr that isnt a closeup of someones face, just literally hit pause anytime
Come on Guys...

Damn shame.
The entire movie of Forrest Gump is beautiful.
One of my favorite movies of all time.
>>70829626
How the fuck is this movie so HD considering how old it is?
>>70832046
This is... valid
>>70843363
Ah you must be one of those kids who thinks cinematography = pretty pictures.
A film without a compelling interesting story or characters is artistic masturbation. Film is character in ACTION. If there is no story to glue everything together and characters to keep the audience invested and interested then it is shit no matter how beautiful the photography is.
Jack and Jill is a really shitty film that was competently shot; nothing is out of focus, nothing underexposed, compositionally sound, etc. It's a film that has "good cinematography" but it's still a shit film. Oh but what's that? You meant pretty pictures, photographic excellence and artistic mise en scene? Let me tell you, no amount of art shots would've saved a film as shitty as Jack and Jill. It would not make it even "at least okay".
The Shining has alot of great shots
This whole film is fucking art
>>70841673
>>70843785
agreed
>>70843785
Lubezki was fucking wasted on this movie
And the movie could be trimmed by nearly an hour and only improve
Innaritu should stick to genre trash instead of trying to be poetic or "artistic"
One of the creepiest shots ever, and it's from the 1930's.
Always thought this shot was really clever
