ER Nurse here. She was stabbed in the lower right quadrant of her abdominal cavity. The blade looked to be about as long again as the waif's own clenched, fist, so about 4-5" long.
The first stab was lower, more in line with the edge of the hip bone, and based on the angle could have hit the liver, transverse colon, or cecum of the large intestine--ie where the medical appendix is.
The second stab was higher and more medial. She twisted the blade as well; The blade could have thus clipped Arya's stomach and transverse colon. With the blade twisted, there is going to be a massive amount of intestinal damage.
The upper stab hitting the liver would more than likely lead to the large amount of bleeding Arya suffered. Liver wounds are notoriously difficult to stitch and the liver is fragile.
If ANY part of the digestive system were to be punctured in the medivial eral; you would die. Treating punctures to the system today requires a complete sterilization of your entire abdominal cavity as well as treatment for complete systemic and septic shock. Your guts are not supposed to spill out inside of you; it is why appendicitis is so deadly if not treated.

In one of the largest studies ever performed on a drug-using population, heroin-addicted US soldiers were monitored on their return home.
95% of the addicted soldiers quit heroin successfully on their return and never became re-addicted.
Addiction can occur with any activity that obviates pain and gives pleasure, be it gambling, sex, alcohol, weed, whatever. The addiction comes from innate psychological issues or the environment of the user. It is not an intrinsic property of a chemical compound. A compound cannot "make you it's slave". People in stressful environments tend to be attracted to relief from that stress. Remove the stress, remove the compulsion to use.

But the reason they had to do this is they have to get her out of braavos and back to Jon and Sansa for the conclusion. There are only two seasons left. They have to get everyone in position for the last big fight against the white walkers, it's the same reasons Cleganebowl is getting skipped.
Originally in the books there was going to be a ten year timeskip so that Arya would be around 20 years old. GRRM struggled with this for years because he wanted the Stark kids to mature for ten years before the last couple of books for the big conclusion. He gave up on it in the end because he couldn't resolve the passage of ten years with Dany's storyline, so the reason things seem so disjointed is originally Arya would have become an assassin, lived in Braavos killing people for a decade, then return as a level 30 rogue to Westeros to help her half-brother and sister. Ricton would have also shown up as a big Conan-style barbarian guy after growing up fighting on cannibal isle for year.
All of this is broken now because no-timeskip and only two seasons of show left. And the last season will be all climactic fighting undead army, so really only one season left to get everyone back in place for the big war. So that's why Arya's plot seems to not make sense and it's like she sailed around the world on a pirate ship to take a six week course on fighting in the dark then immediately sailed back.
I don't like a lot of things D&D have done, but this isn't really their fault. In order to get ready for the final season they have to move the players around quickly. It's really GRRM's fault for trying to write the timeskip then giving up on it.

I don't mind production logistics affecting a plot but it's all about HOW BADLY THEY WROTE THIS. My friend and I came up with a better version in half an hour (Arya sticks an Arya Mask on an unexpecting victim, in this case it was the younger actress who hired the faceless guild to assasinate the older mummer in the first place. That's why she looks so placid looking over the town from the bridge in the first place. God... I'm not going to go on fixing other people's mistakes but you get the idea).
