My wife is Japanese and usually she watches shit tons of Japanese TV Shows on our TV trough Youtube just not even 1 of them is translated into English.
They have same good shows , specially the documentary's they are producing.

Which is why you don't get it - it's all keigo aka forced polite speech. Or when it's not it's obviously not and they're still forcing themselves to be casual. No one really speaks normally in Japan the way westerners would perceive it unless you're really really familiar with the person, like close family or something.

late night tv though isnt bad. tvtokyo's drama24 has some solid stuff. every friday from 12 there is a series that runs a month or so with themes about sex, violence, subcultures and offbeat shit.
