Before the waif came to kill her, Arya said nothing about returning to Winterfell, she was talking about travelling literally anywhere else, even to the edge of the earth. Suddenly, after the fight, she decides she wants to take back Winterfell, which she should know is a lost cause.
The waif stole Arya's identity because she's tired of sweeping up that dusty old cube and wants to become someone important, Arya presented the perfect opportunity for this.
