What's wrong with Brave? The movie was about freedom and independence within limits, and deciding your fate on your terms rather than having it forced on you.
The only feminism in that movie was the healthy kind of feminism.

If you want a nifty monster/child couple, why not go with Scandinavian folklore and use Huldra?
A young girl lost in the wilderness trying to find his way home with the aid of a powerful young woman practically writes itself. Huldra by their nature yearn to be around humans and become them, so she'd be learning from the girl while he leans on her for survival and comfort.
Hell,if the young girl's father is a widower, the Huldra will probably marry him and truly become human when the vows are exchanged in a church.
