I can't believe the idoicy I am seeing in this thread. Some pretty basic things:
1. The Gideons have placed over 2 billion bibles, their mission to "Maintain the Word of the Lord in an Increasingly Lost World."
2. Hotels allow this because it has proven effective at preventing some suicides. Suicides sometimes rent a hotel room to off themselves so they don't leave a mess for family and "taint" the home. But sometimes the individual finds the bible while contemplating their final act and a scripture will "speak" to them.
While largely anecdotal, many individuals have attributed their overcoming suicidal thoughts to Gideon Bibles, so the mission is doing some good.
