This happened last night
>go to the theaters late night after work to see the last screening of Warcraft
>finally find a parking spot, see a bunch of thuggish niggers walking into the theater lobby
>awww fuck, they're going to go see the Warcraft movie
>go inside, see a line of teenagers and thuggish niggers waiting

I don't understand the appeal behind these horror movies, they're all clones of each other and never scary

Because $$$ from China doesnt count? Or that a Chinese company doesnt own Legendary Pictures - the studio that made Warcraft? This isnt the 1950s where the US reigned supreme in the world and nobody else mattered. You are living in the world today where China is economically on par with the US.

FYI : James Wan has another hit on his hands - Conjuring 2 was projected to do in the low 30s and it did above $40 million - proving again that he is one of the biggest directors in Hollywood today.
>>
>>70753233
I don't get it either. Babadook was ok but not worth $10, glad I saw it for free. And that movie shits on most 'horror' movies.
>>
>>70753108
Wait let me get this right.

A movie about a "horde" of immigrants invading another world, raiding the local natives, then teaming up with them because of a larger evil (Deus ex machina) wasn't popular?

Gee, I wonder why...

It made $90m in China in its first 2 days, 25% of which goes to the studio ($22.5m).

The film's budget is $160m.
>>

55% of what it makes in China is lost through taxation and theater cuts.

Wanda bought Legendary Pictures last year. The 25% that Hollywood movie studios get from China doesnt apply here since a Chinese company owns the studio that made Warcraft.

Even if it was 50%, it's a $45m cut. The budget, again, was $160m, and that doesn't even include marketing or other costs.

To claim that "it made its budget back in 2 days in China" is bullshit, you fucking idiots.
>>
>>70753108
Let's face it it's a pretty bad film. Remove all the Warcraft-specific elements and references and what you get is a bland, extremely messy fantasy adventure with bad actors.
>>

They live in a bubble. They played it and all their friends played it. They think everyone played it.
>>
>>70755503
The cut is much higher than 50% in China since Wanda is entertainment congloremate that owns movie studios, is a distributor and exhibitor (it owns the largest movie chain in China just like it does in the US where they bought AMC Theaters).

When it is all said and done, Warcraft will make about $250 - 300 million in China.
>>
It's not socially acceptable to like high fantasy in the US. It's not cool nerdy like sci-fi, capeshit and low fantasy
>>

kek

Have you not been keeping up with what's happening? The daily grosses so far have been:

Wednesday - $45.7m
Thursday - $46m +0.7%
Friday - $32.9m -28.5%
Saturday - $21m -36.2%
Sunday - $10.8m -48.6%

It's dropping like a fucking rock. At $156m through Sunday, it's going to be lucky to crack $240m at all, let alone cruise past $250m into the $300m region.

lotr was successful because its the most restrained example of the "high fantasy" genre.

Most of high fantasy is shit like warcraft, where people just throw fireballs (or polymorph) whenever the author needs to quickly resolve a situation, but whenever drama is being forced, suddenly magic doesn't work for literal reasons.

Horror movies are the best to watch with friends, so you can have conversations about that scary scene, talk about that friend that spilled his popcorn while watching it and make fun of the friend that screamed like a little bitch on that one scene. Basically, normies love it.

Warcraft isn't the conventional model. Universal distributes, so it'll be the company taking the big hit for its failure here. In China its deal is with CFG which owns the theaters, so they'll get a higher cut.

Still 300-350 is conservative and it probabl won't make that.

Yeah, that sequel that took years to get greenlit, and is STILL in "pre-production"

That shit isnt happening

And unlike Warcraft, Pacific Rim made 100m domestic

Star Trek made 257m domestic and only 127m foreign

DOMESTIC matters a whole lot more than foreign

Look at Resident Evil and Battleship, that shit stopped getting sequels because it bombed domestically

No argument there, but the idea that a $160m movie needs to make 600m+ to make a profit is a pile of horseshit. Yes the international take is less $ for the studio, but there are secondary concerns as well for some of these films such as merchandising, licensing, distribution deals for other media types, etc... If Warcraft looks to be something that could turn into a honest franchise in China there is plenty of profit motive to keep making movies even if the movies themselves aren't the big money maker.

Anyway that Pacific Rim sequel just cast boyega, they wouldn't make that announcement without some kind of traction going on behind the scenes. It doesn't look like it's going to have the same problem that the Tron sequel did.

You know Warcraft is already big in China right, its not going to grow anymore across the world than it is now, and China already has special deals in place when it comes to Blizzard, they've already got the market cornered because China lets Blizzard exist in their country

And the idea of Warcraft needing 600m+ is not far fetched, especially when it is going to do terribly in the US, realistically the movie only needs to make like 150m domestic and 200m foreign to break even, but that is clearly not going to happen

If Warcraft only makes 60m domestically its going to need to make close to 500-600m foreign to see any actual profit.

>>
>>70759584
While I'd argue it doesn't actually look like shit, Blizzard did kind of shoot any movie adaptation in the leg when they developed the lore of the original games.

While Warcraft 1 was fine as a game about orcs and humans duking it out, the way they established the background of it is ridiculously convoluted.

>For war to happen, you need to know how Orcs got the tech to get there, and why they wanted to go, so you need to know about Fel magic
>Because of Fel magic, you need to know about demons and the Burning Crusade
>You also need to know about the Burning Crusade because it's their sugar daddy that is at fault for Medivh
>For the sugar daddy to have a goal, you need to know who the Titans and the Old Ones are
>To know who they are beyond "olympians"/"Cthulhu", you need to know about the curse of flesh and the origin of Azeroth
>Alternatively you could skip the Old Ones and the Titans to give sugar daddy a motivation, but then you need to explain about Medivh's mom, and you might as well just introduce the titans and Old Ones at that point

And this is just the stuff you need to establish before the bad guy of the story gets the amount of motivation Sauron had when Tolkien established that his power is bottled up in a ring he lost.

Someone explain to me why Travis was chosen as lead? Durotan had more emotion in the first 5 secs you see him than Lothar had all movie.

And Warcraft didn't need to explain about the Night Elves and the Goblins and the Tauren either, but for the villain to have a motivation, Sargeras's background to a point is neccessary.

You don't need to understand where Sauron comes from to know he wants a ring, and that if he gets it, shit will get real.

When it comes to Gul'dan, you need to know his motivation is that he's working for a bigger bad, but when you know that, you need to know what that bigger bad's motivation is, or it's just shifting the core issue of the villain having no reason to do anything beyond "because he feels like it".

There's more to Sargeras wanting to Gul'dan to destroy Azeroth than just feeling like it. Some basic explanation of it has to be given for the villain's immediate motivation, or the villain might as well not be there.

Warcraft will likely end up breaking even, but that's it, there will be no sequel.

We will have a Conjuring 3 though, with a production budget of $40 million it will make a tidy profit at the box office.

However for 'Now You See Me 2' it's a bomb, it cost $90 million in production and won't come near breaking even in it's box office run, there will not be a 3rd movie that's for sure.

Well it's not wrong, it's BASED on a true STORY. So of course that isn't to say that it's based on true events.

sure have been a lot of big budget bombs this year

Almost everything that's in the movie was reported as happening by the family. Most likely was the kids acting shitty though
