2D animation would have been slightly more relevant for slightly longer
There'd be a larger line up for the Disney princesses
There would have either been a shitty prequel or a shitty sequel featuring twice as many funny animal sidekicks
>>

The Black Cauldron is amazing. It's actually the first movie I remember seeing in theaters and remember it being intense as hell. Shame Disney used it as an excuse not to try anything new for the forseeable future.

you obviously haven't seen it. it will be acclaimed by critics, yes, but it won't find an audience. it's "about" the refugee crisis but actual refugees/discussions about the crisis occupies less than a quarter of the screen time. it's respectful towards the subject matter of refugees in the same way that I'd call Son of Saul respectful towards that of the Holocaust: neither show nor tell. sure, one can't argue that the urgency and relevancy of the film factored into the win, but it stands on its own rights. you could've stripped the footage of the refugees (i.e. everything that is "about" the refugees) and you'd still have a better film than most of the past few years, at least formalistically.

no problem. if you are inherently opposed to immigrants then you'll have quarrels with the film, as a lot of people itt seem to. but then again, it would be foolish to consider oneself serious about film if one refuses to watch/appreciate films with strong contemporary political themes. aren't a whole lot -- if not the majority -- of the great modern films overtly political/cover progressive subject matters? Carol, Arabian Nights, Fury Road and Hateful Eight come to mind, and those are all from last year.

>>70760700
I guess the same could be reiterated here. I get that we might differ in terms of ideology, but I urge you to watch it nonetheless. its visuals are some of the best I've seen (a lot of it is obviously constructed, despite being labeled a documentary).

if you have a general understanding of an art form (say film) then you'll most likely be able to evaluate a film you've only seen once. what that quote proposes is some idea that every piece of art must be experienced multiple times, but if I were to return to Paris I sure wouldn't seek out the fucking Mona Lisa again, but something else that I have yet to see in person. guidelines for how to experience art is never a good idea, at least not in my opinion (and, although it is another conversation, filmmakers are not the same as filmgoers).

my response was pretty brief, but I hope you get what I'm trying to say. stipulating guidelines for art is foolish, as is the idea that art even *can* be experienced several times. yes, film is often easier to get ahold of than theatre, but seldom in the format that it "should" be experienced in (projection, obviously, and Kubrick would likely agree). now, I don't think you can understand a film completely after a single viewing -- that's not at all what I'm saying -- but if film is a genuine interest then you'll likely be more interested in gaining an understanding of the art form that you simply cannot gain by just rewatching Citizen Kane (or whatever film) into oblivion.

>it has to do with your ability to understand and empathize with differing viewpoints regardless of their origin.

There's a difference in all this. Fellini's 'E la nave va' has a scene you can choose to interpret as being 'pro-human' in the liberal sense. A bunch of snooty aristocrats dance and sing with a shipful of Syrian refugees (I shit you not) and they all blend into one ambiguous crowd ā€“ does this invalidate the rest of the film? It's simply a footnote you can brush off as a bit misguided. Vidor's 'Our Daily Bread' has the characters form what is essentially a kolkhoz. Most all Stalinist and Maoist propaganda has this hysterical radiant joy being transmitted with absolute sincerity ā€“ cinema of ideologues who genuinely believe in what they're making art about. It's this aestheticism and ideological purity I can empathise with, even as someone who's very far right. The same qualities that make any film good.

That being said, Ferrara and Straub-Huillet are most often shit because their ideas are shit, which is directly linked to their liberalism.

Barry Lyndon is about a man with no scruples, who never reforms, and who comes to a sorry end as a result of his actions. His one moment of compassion toward an enemy leads directly to his ruin. All of this is exactly counter to the Enlightenment liberal view.

I'll grant you that Dr. Strangelove isn't really conservative in any way, but I think it's a mistake to try to pigeonhole people, especially artists, as exclusively "leftist" or "rightist" or whatever anyway. Anon upthread was looking for examples of rightist filmmakers and Kubrick struck me as someone who generally followed a conservative perspective of sorts.

I have no intention of sitting here and typing out a list of Kubrick analyses for someone who is autistic enough to interpret films in a purely literal fashion. The fact alone that you can sit here and type this shit out proves that you know absolutely nothing about film. You're the type of person who would watch 'Turin Horse' and write 'The Turin Horse is a harrowing tale of a man and his daughter whose horse refuses to move'

I can agree with Barry Lyndon strictly in terms of plot, but I do think it's a very, very humane film in how it portrays his character, and I'd personally categorize it as farther to the left than what you would. that being said, regardless of whether you'd label him liberal or conservative, he's still not political in the sense that leftist filmmakers are (Godard, et al.) and few conservative/rightist filmmakers are as overtly political in their filmmaking as the leftist are (though that isn't to say that the Godardian leftist filmmaking is superior by virtue of having a more visible ideology).

>>70762552

not him but massive Fordfag here. Ignoring the fact that Democrats and Republicans had a massive demographic switch during the Civil Rights Movement, Ford was a filmmaker less interested in making overtly political statements (Pappy made Stagecoach and Grapes of Wrath only one year apart) then he was in a set of themes: the individualism vs. collectivism, examination of masculinity, and the evolution of the American Dream, pertaining particularly to the frontier. This is why he can make films ranging from How Green Was My Valley to The Sun Shines Bright and still have a filmography that has a consistent and cohesive persona.

>>70761328
I wouldn't necessarily say his later films were progressive as much as they were reflective and inclusive. Ford did recognize that he made some generalizations in his early films, but he never attempted to revise or correct it, just to tell a story from a different point of view.

I can see Barry Lyndon as fairly humane in its treatment of the character, yeah. But still not sympathetic to his ethos or actions.
