This is actually raises a solid point about the nature of the Sopranos as a show: it largely failed its original mission.
The original concept (before Livia's actress died) was regarding Tony having to deal with his two families: his mob underlings and his biological family. The fact that the vast majority of fans and critics overwhelmingly preferred the mafia scenes to those spent with AJ and Meadow proves that one aspect went down better than the other. The scenes with Carmela are still highly regarded but the fact remains that if Tony had no children, the show would still be considered one of the greatest shows ever; if, on the other hand, Tony had never been a mafioso, the show wouldn't have got past the first season.
