Well he was part human. I think part of the tension was that he was not a "real" Klingon child, not full-blooded in the sense that his father was and he didn't get the opportunity to be raised as a Klingon child either. He was basically kidnapped by his own strong-woman mother away from his father. The kind of exclusive ownership she presumed over him was disgusting and very, very difficult to watch.
