ITT: Underrated sci-fi movies.
>>70732680
does that say rob schneider
It's underrated because it isn't universally acknowledged as the greatest science fiction movie of all time.
>>70732690
Roy Scheider.
>>70732690
nah it's dad, roy scheider
If I can be pedantic, aliens aren't science fiction, they're pure fantasy. Life can only exist on Earth and the Fermi paradox proves it.
>>70732680
havent actually seen this turd. sell me on it.
>>70732680
why do you think it's underrated? It was forgettable from memory, though I watched it straight after 2001
>>70732680
My favorite part was John Lithgow hyperventilating for ten minutes.
>>70732680
Is that where the aliens made a second sun out of Saturn?
>>70732747
It hardly proves anything. It opens up an interesting line of questioning. How could you misunderstand it so badly?
>>70732680
Top marks. I actually cried at that movie.
>>70732747
A paradox that boils down to ' ayylums don't real cos they havent visited our planet out of the countless trillions in the universe in the brief span of time our species has has reliable recording techniques'.
If you think it 'proves' anything you have mental illness.
>>70732796
Haha, this.
All sci-fi is inherently overrated
>>70732998
Actually the paradox takes a position on alien life. It assumes that alien life is common enough that we should have heard or observed something by now.
One way of resolving the paradox is to deny that assumption.
The evidence we should have observed would be light transmissions, radio waves, probes, etc. Not just ayylums visiting.
>>70732727
God JJL is so fucking hot in that movie. Good movie too. I held up well to at least three viewings over the years, but I think the bloom was off the rose after four.
>>70732726
>tfw you will never have sex with Milla Jovovich on the actual set when everyone had left for the night. And she remains in Leeloo character all the time
>>70732997
Holy fuck this movie was a trip
>>70732747
Too bad the Drake equation exists
>>70733194
>>70733144
Or we're the lucky first
>>70733972
That's possible, but given we're a bit late to the game timeline wise, it seems unlikely. IIRC, there are more stars dying than being formed. A generation of stars, some of which had systems capable of supporting life, have come and gone before our star did, some of which have gone and exploded already.
>>70732747
Nah, we know for a fact that life can arise given certain conditions, and it's a statistical certainty that those conditions exist on billions of planets. Earth proves that aliens exist.
>>70732680
I feel like I'm the only to have seen this
>>70732747
>millions of galaxies
>billions of solar systems
>trillions of planets
>hurrrr there is no life in the universe durrr
The fact that life exists on this planet by chance means there is an extremely high probability there is life else where. Also look up YT videos on UFO sitings. Some in my state were eery as hell
>>70733205
>lazy eye
How have I never noticed this before?
>>70734432
We need to import more stars from the third universe to sustain our aging population
>>70734657
No it doesn't you fucking idiot. I'm so fucking tired of puseudo intellectualist like you who say this crap, when you obituary don't understand probability 101.
We don't know the chance of life forming, for all we know that chance could have 1 in a billion trillion Google and it was against the odds that we alone came to be.
We have no idea of the odds so stop saying "highly likely" and other dumb shit
>>70734819
>you don't understand probability
>says the guy who thinks life is a 1 in a quintillion chance
Stop posting kiddo, it's embarrassing. Even if it was 1 in 1 billion there would be life all over the universe.
>>70734857
That's why I didn't say 1 in a billion you fucking tard.
Just stopping, you're embarrassing. You don't have a fucking clue what your talking about.
>>70734819
Also since I know you're a complete faggot redditor and you won't look it up, here is the video I was referring to.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=h-PlCwD3W8g
Stationary object in the sky, several other smaller objects exiting and leaving said object in the blink of an eye. Also you have too much trust in NASA/Government if you think there actually was proof or contact with Alien life forms that they would tell everyone.

>We don't know the chance of life forming, for all we know that chance could have 1 in a billion trillion
You're a fucking moron. It doesn't matter the odds, the scale of the universe is such that however big the odds are, it is still in high probability that there is life in the universe. We are living breathing proof of this fact. You realize there could be life forms thousands of galaxies away, arguing about this same thing on their own anonymous message boards? Anything is possible.

>>70734964
You realize there have been far more sightings of "angels" through out history than aliens yet I bet you just brush that off yet accept this as fact, why? Because your a moron.
Even if someone really did see some strange shit in the sky, youre just as bad as religious fags going "it must be god" by going" it must be aliens", it would be far more likely to be a government made prototype of some ship.
>too much faith in the government/masa What proof do you have that it was a genuine alien? Why would I put faith in you when you have nothing
Don't call me a reddit or because you have no actual argument against actual logic like probability. If you want to keep shouting baseless shit then fuck off to /X/ or tumblr with all the other fuck tards.
>>70735055
>I don't understand how probability works: the post
fucking >>>/x/ goddamnit
>>70735214
I'm willing to believe there have been Angels, I'm also willing to believe they are our ancestors interpretation of extra-terrestrials. All Abrahamic religions are denoted of Sun/sky worship anyways.
Also you're the retard who doesn't understand probability. Probability says out of the trillions of planets in the universe there is at least one other Earth like planet, or a planet in a habitable zone capable of sustaining life. That is common sense. Does it really shatter your world view that much to see this as true?
>>70735262
>we are the only life forms out of trillions of planets even though similar Earth type planets in habitable zones have been discovered
Sure kid
>>70735346
You don't get it do you? Even if another earth, or billions of planets like earth are out there, its not a given that life exists there. we don't know the exact parameters life can form in, we have never observed it forming from nothing itself, we don't know what causes life to form, so we have no idea how likely it is to form. Hell maybe life can't form in earth conditions and has to form somewhere else first then land on earth to grow. Maybe silicon based life exists which would change everything
I'm not saying aliens don't exist, I'm saying we don't know and we can't even pretend to know (like you're trying to do) without either making direct contact or answering those questions I stated and others. The point is, I'm remaining honest and reserving judgment on something none of us can claim to know, not even the probability, with our current knowledge
>>70735630
We could have already made contact and they could be observing us for thousands of years. It is not logical to say they don't exist just because. That's like saying atoms don't exist because you can't see them..
>>70735432
I'm not saying life doesn't exist, I'm saying we don't know. Learn to read, then go learn probability and how you have to actually know the odds before you can make claims about the outcomes
>>70735432
>I don't know how probability works
>>70732747
>he doesn't believe in ayy lmaos
Where did we come up with the idea for ayy lmaos if they don't exist, then?
>>70735709
We know the odds. Odds are that a planet must be within a habitable zone. Aka in the zone of a star that is not too hot and not too cold. There have been observations of thousands of them. It is logical to throw out a wild probability like 1 in a billion planets support life, and even with probability that high there would still be thousands upon thousands of life supporting planets.
>>70735718
>projecting
>>>/reddit/
>>70735709
When the scope of the universe is involved, you have an exceptional case and traditional notions of probability don't really apply. We know for a fact that Earth is a terrestrial planet orbiting an unremarkable star in an unremarkable corner of an unremarkable galaxy. It is nothing short of an absurdity to claim that our planet would be unique.
pure fucking kino
>>70735695
And we could have made contact with real angels and God exists and they've been observing us for thousands of years. Just because you can see him does mean he doesn't exist... See how similar you sound.
For the last time, im not saying "aliens don't exist", im saying I don't know, you don't know and you should quit pretending to know until you have some hard evidence, or some actual odds to figure out the chances of more life existing. Until then it's nothing by wishful thinking and faith guiding your opinion
"But I, being poor, have only my dreams. I have spread my dreams under your feet. Tread softly because you tread on my dreams." Great Movie
>>70735892
You're trying pretty fucking hard to pretend like you know.
>>70735892
You're wrong though. The faith-based claim is to say that Earth life is unique in a universe with trillions upon trillions of worlds. It's an absurdity. The default, logical assumption is that Earth is not in any way unique.
>>70735982
I don't have a dog in this fight, but he's right, "I don't know" is a lot more scientific than what you're spouting
One of my favorite horror comedies of recent years.
>>70734819
You can't be this retarded, anon.
>>70734657
its not more likely because it happened with us.
We still could be the only ones and just be extremely lucky
maybe theres other crazy shit in the universe but no life in the form we know it
>>70732807
Jupiter, yeah.
>>70736200
It has the appearance of being scientific to someone who is ignorant. We know that the universe is uniform. We know for a fact that life can and does exist in the universe, and the probability of it existing in only one location is non-existent.
>>70734560
It's not underrated it's just shit.
>>70736593

>the probability of life existing in only one location is non-existence

>>70743243
I hate this movie. Did you think it was funny purposefully?
>>70732726
Leeloo Dalas multipass.

In terms of falling hard for a movie character, I'd have to rank Leeloo Dallas Multipass in the top five.
In no particular order, other top five contenders are:
Apple
Harmony Faith Lane
Kaylee Frye

yeah. there's so many fucked up laughs in it, it's not a so bad it's good movie, it's just good. it worked for me anyway.
this might be in a similar category, dark gritty low budget scifi comedy
>>70743738

My favourite
>>70746962
Gonna watch purely for Kristin
The black hole. Absolutely shit as a star wars cash in but Underrated as a sci fi horror.
>>70734962
You actually dont know what youre talking about. Scientists have been able to recreate RNA, sugars, amino acids in space conditions by way of artificial comets in a vacuum hit with ultraviolet light. That means any comet, asteroid, meteor etc likely carries the building blocks of life and any time it collides with a planet in a hospitable region with water and certain conditions, (thousands of which we have already detected in this "goldilocks zone") there is a high likelyhood for life. Life doesnt have to be intelligent and we have barely scratched the surface of space exploration or observation. It is also mathematically impossible that not only is there no intelligent life, but its mathematically impossible that there isnt an exact duplicate of yourself in the universe. There is a numberphile video on that subject, i dont feel like posting it. There are also theories that tardegrades may have been carried here on a commet. So stop spouting your 12 year old bullshit arguments.

>>70747607
You know what sci-fi means? SCIENTIFIC is the significant part of SCI-fi. What is scientific about floating without helmet, and space suit and kissing in vacuum?
most of the movies ITT don't meet that criteria though
>>70743675
Never understood the bad reception. Watched three times. It is hypnotic and fun to watch. Also teenage horniness is not a crime!
>>70747639
the other 2 have a similar style of animation and story telling. not that they're sequels, but they're well worth it too
>>70732680
It's not bad but pretty heavy handed. Also kinda ruins what 2001 was which is the worst thing a sequel can do.
>>70734560
i managed about 40 minutes of that, couldnt hold on any longer, its just garbage.
>>70734819
single cell life has been found fossilized on other bodies in our solar system...i think it was mars but it may have been an asteroid or some shit like that...anyway, life has started twice in our solar system alone, only ours was succesful but it has been confirmed to have formed elsewhere than earth. There is also a place on earth completely isolated where simple multicelled life has formed that does not conform to any other life on the planet, a completely seperate evolutionary branch to where we started....you are more likely to win the lottery ten times running without ever buying a ticket than for us to be the only life in the universe.
faggot
>>70748047
It's not about SHIT movies guys...

>>70743849
I really like the Riddick movies personally.
I wonder if Vin Diesel ever did an D&D game with the movie setting.
>>70746178
The ending was perfect though. Even Stephen King said that he wished his book has that sort of ending. I think it's one of the few times where humanity ever fought back against a lovecraftian horror and won. It has this whole ''everything might be shit but humanity will come through somehow, so don't give up''.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IMpvgDzKmQ
And that music. Perfectly fitting as well.
>>70746464
The CG was great but Albator's friend deciding to go against his wishes at the end was knife stab in the heart. The story was missing something though and letting that kid control the Accadia at the end was bullshit.
