The 1989 Batman was absolute trash. Campy garbage.
BvS did a great job of capturing the spirit of the darker Batman books, like Arkham Asylum, Hush and The Dark Knight Returns. It's really the only good Batman movie in terms of capturing the character.

Also having the joker be the guy that killed batman's parents was a good move. Gives batman more reason to hate the joker and consider him his arch nemesis.
