I now understand why the ironborn soldiers suck at fighting on mainland.
Long ago, the ancient Ironborn discovered a method to revive themselves after getting life-threatening injuries - submerging themselves in water. They practised fighting keeping this in mind, and a new way of battle which revolves around water revivals was developed.
Now, it was fine back then, when the ironborn were busy fighting amongst themselves, but their techniques turned out to be not-so-good on the mainland, where water bodies aren't always nearby. The ironborn were careless at fighting, not really defending themselves properly and being reckless in general. Obviously, this strategy failed due to lack of water revivals.
The obvious question which comes to mind now is - why don't they develop a new fighting technique? The answer - their culture.
The ironborn are very conservative. Even if an alternate method offers huge benefits, they stick to the 'old ways'.
Interesting fact: The whole drowned god baptism ceremony is based on water revivals.
