Not him, but Doc's sets on the trail of a mysterious organization called the Golden Fang, which he thinks is involved in drug trafficking and the disappearance of his old gf. He follows all the leads, they all seem to hint at some shadow government that controls everything, but it's so elusive that he can't get his hands around it. The suspicion remains, but there's no proof so you have to go on pretending everything is fine when it's really not at all.
All this a metaphor for the death of 60's optimism and the rise of conspiratorial paranoia and an apparent era of distrust. Somebody else wrote that the scene with Bigfoot eating the pot was symbolism for the consumption of 60's counterculture by, well, squares like Bigfoot, who were deeply wounded but felt obliged to keep it bottled up as a means of posturing in a cold world. I always liked that analysis. But of course, as with any PTA, or Pynchon for that matter, much of it can be picked apart and thought about, and there is a multitude of messages you can take away from it. 'swhat makes it good imo.
