> Amid rampant speculation pieces about the decline in revenue of sequels and remakes, a new report has posited that the drop in box office receipts, which some reports claim will be funtionally lower than any year since the 1920s, can be attributed to a much larger problem - the idea that millennials (people in the coveted 18-35 age range) are seeing less movies.
>The Atlantic's Derek Thompson postulates that this decline is due to the aforementioned proliferation of sequels by studios aiming to ape the "Marvel model," but that the effect of that sequel boom is an alienation of young people who instead turn to Netflix and other on-demand services to consume content. The result is a climate in which non-sequels and remakes flounder at the box office, while those same sequels and remakes are caught in a cycle of diminishing returns.

What a useless term. People in their 30's are in a completely different generation than people who grew up with the internet and smartphones (real millennials).

Retards watch movies on iPhones now. They don't have any taste and can't appreciate the theater experience.

With the amount of content you get, the ticket and food prices are just too high. I get that it's not the theater's fault but someone has to take a hit to their bottom line if they want to keep pulling in customers.

>Statistics showing diminishing movie attendance by young adults often are skiewed because they depend on surveys conducted via landline phones. The mobile generation is “incredibly hard to reach.”

>Other research shows that Millennial attendance has been “growing by double digits for the last five years, and into the first quarter of this year,” Corcoran says. What’s more, “the movies they go to are the premium, higher ticket price movies.”

>Or maybe people don't want to pay $20 and have a garbage selection of movies to pick from if they don't have anything but a big corporate theater near them.
It's 100% this. Fuck off with the "kids these days" whining, and think about why things are the way they are. A young person can
>drive himself and friends to a specific physical location, choose from a limited selection of films to see at a specific time, pay increasingly exorbitant prices for tickets and food if you want it, and then see something that in all likelihood isn't good
or
>pay 8 bucks a month for netflix, choose from thousands of movies and shows, millions more on torrents, chill out at home with your own food and however many people you want whenever you feel like it

Movie theaters are dying. There is no real advantage to them anymore now that home theaters are so common. People only go to them for the spectacle of a big screen and big sound, which is why blockbusters always do well but smaller films are increasingly seen as not worth the expense for a big screen and not paid for at all.

The question though is if the film industry can sustain itself on a market that almost solely wants to see things as part of a low monthly subscription. Say movie theaters do die out, or drastically decline. With the home video market already destroyed, how do filmmakers turn a profit? Just from lowly licensing fees to streaming services? We'd see a huge reduction in the amount of films made, and how much money they can be made with.
>>
>>70645583
No, ridiculous prices killed movie theaters. Nobody wants to spend $20-25 just for two movie tickets. And god forbid you want to eat or drink something.

Not when you can wait for a couple of months and either pick up a torrent, buy the blu-ray, or red box it.

It simply isn't cost effective to go to the theater when there are so many other options.

>Postulates

I remember a strictly empirical based lecturer at my university for my fourth year mech eng unit who hated purely university experienced lecturers would often use this word.

He said there was two kinds of people in this world: those who postulate, and those that do. He would nearly always end every class with "do, don't postulate".

Considering he had 40 years experience with BHP and BP, was a lead engineer for the European Space Program, and had 6 kids, all of whom were surgeons/specialists/doctors, I tended to take what he said as truth. This is especially true with him being absolutely anti-sjw, and claiming any leeway given to anybody, will always breed inferiority and poor workmanship.

Truly he was the most based man I'd ever met, and would probably attribute the lack of demand to creative bankruptcy.
>>
>>70645583

Having grown up with all your movies and cartoons being CGI? Not knowing how to function without looking at your phone every 2 minutes? Being raised on the internet? Having your childhood defined by the cultural wasteland that was post-9/11?

>The point was that the term becomes meaningless if you're going to include such a wide range.

It's a generational moniker, the standard is approximately twenty years, or about the amount of time for the early members of the generation to grow up and start having children of their own. There's an early cohort/late cohort divide to most generations because of it, where the earlier members are more like the generation before and the younger more like the generation after. You see it with Boomers and GenXers as well.

There's NOTHING worth watching in the movies nowadays and I've been working there for 7 months so far. working in the Theaters made me hate movies and stick more to the source material because it's THAT fucking bad. You know those Simpsons episodes with the posters that predict like the umpteenth sequel to a movie? It feels like that.

BvS, Civil War aka (Cap and his buttbuddy have a play fight with the Avengers), The Jungle Book (only thing good was Walken as Louie), Alice: Through the who gives a shit, just baaaad.

The meme of 'adults' not knowing how to use computers is over. If all these 50 year olds can use social media and smart phones, then the 30 somethings are much closer to 18 year olds than you think.

HOLLYWOOD PANDERING TO THEM IS WHY MOVIES ARE MORE SHIT THAN EVER

Older generations knowing how to use technology is a different issue than younger generations not knowing a world without it.

The digital age that started around the millennium probably represents one of the biggest shifts to ever take place in how humans interact with their world, and lumping together people on different sides of that shift simply just doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

They are too expensive.
They are not luxurious/enticing enough - and if they are, it's some stupid fucking luxury theater where the seats are slightly nicer and they provide food option, which in turn is very expensive.

The whole fucking reason people started going to the movies was innovation, wasn't it? The ability to see something they couldn't see anywhere else, and with the added bonus of food/drink.

They need to innovate again or they will just get gradually phased out/down - just like TV.

this

while people can complain about theaters gouging customers on concessions, that's where they make their money. They don't really make a whole lot on ticket sales anymore, so to stay in business they have to raise food and drink prices.

The real elephant in the room is how much movies cost to make these days. I mean just look at some of the budgets for blockbusters, it's insane. It's easy to yell about da joos in hollywood, actor salaries, expensive CGI and special effects, but the prices are all getting so ridiculous because movies are getting so expensive to make.

>getting creative with movies

There are creative movies but turns out you just want to see capeshit and rehashes as proven by your post, let's blame Hollywood for that.
>>
>>70649084
Why would they get creative when you still pay to watch them you fucking retard.
>>
>>70649118
Nope. I've been to about 30+ theaters in my lifetime in various states and all have been upper class areas. The stuff i'm describing doesn't happen every single time but when it does it makes me wonder why I bother going to the movies at all. I get just as much enjoyment watching the movies at home on my nice TV with nice sound.

I don't need to have the chairs literally shaking from the sound or to develop tinnitus from overly loud movies (i'm looking at you Man of Steel) that don't know the meaning of restraint. There have been a handful of experiences where I actually thought being in the theater was a better experience and they can be counted on one hand. Avatar was one of those even though I thought the movie itself was mediocre.
>>
>>70649064
Not sure if troll or retarded, I guess likely both. I'm a Gen X though.
>>
>>70647803
Why am I going to go out of my way to get something I won't enjoy?

I can wait a few weeks and just get a perfect blu ray rip.
>>
>floors are frequently sticky or dirty
>everything costs too much
>seats are uncomfortable
>movies come out in two months and can be immediately rented for a buck at redbox
>can come free with netflix/prime/whatever
>can be pirated easily
>can't speak to friends about the cool movie you're watching
>having to deal with other people who in no way add to the experience

Watching movies in the theater offers no avenue for social interaction, and even stigmatizes it. Nobody wants to go out with friends and just SIT and maybe say "Haha that was cool :)" after it's done. Conversely, people who're okay with seeing movies alone have no reason not to pirate them and watch them in the comfort of their homes instead. Gimmicks like recliners or dinner won't save theaters, they need to engage people's sociability somehow.
>>
Not only it is expensive, but as society becomes more self-centered, people are ditching their social lives in favour of spending more time alone in seclusion.
>>
A high quality 1080p 150" projector is $500-700. And you can watch good movies on it. Whatever you want. The theater is dead.
>>
>>70649350
I thought the point of the theater was to be entertained or have your thoughts provoked or any of the other myriad things that films do and then discuss with friends afterwards over pie and coffee.
>>
>>70649350
If you spoke to me while watching a movie we wouldn't watch movies together anymore.
>>
>>70647279
>>70647171

I'd beat the fuck out of you if I encountered you while watching a movie.
>>
If you have a decent TV and a decent sound system (or headphones) there is literally ZERO reason to watch a movie in a theater unless you want tinnitus and to be annoyed by obnoxious strangers.

You can save up all the money you'd spend going to overpriced theaters and buy yourself a good home theater system. It's simply an outdated model and it's dying the death it deserves to. Don't even get me started on the crap pay theaters give out with sporadic hours. I worked way too hard to get paid that little compared to other minimum wage jobs.

Maybe at a time when a town had one theatre and watching a movie was an event.
