A French-American movie, certainly.

To be honest I don't really consider Father Ted to be a British sitcom, I was just pointing out that it isn't a massive leap to call it one since it was produced almost entirely within the UK TV system.

Bravo Ireland! You truly are one of the top ten cleverest islands in the archipelago known worldwide, since time immemorial, as the British Isles.

If only you could be trusted to remember where you planted your potatoes.
>>
>>70579556
Never claimed Irish people are stupid, you're putting words in my mouth because you lack basic comprehension skills. I am Irish myself. It's a fact that Ireland is geographically part of the British Isles- and it has been a fact for thousands of years. Never claimed Ireland was politically British (it's not and shouldn't be). Being part of a geographical area doesn't make you a part of a nationstate that bases it's name off of that geographical area.

Before we continue this whole "Ireland is in the British Isles" I wanna remind you all that yes Ireland technically is in the British Isles geographically however neither Government pushes this train of thought and neither formally recognizes the fact that Ireland is in anyway "British" even if it is a matter of Geography and terminology.

Britbong Imperialists need to calm down and recognize they lost

Englishman here.

I always wondered why Waterford and Wexford has such English sounding names since the Angles and Saxons never settled Ireland in large amounts (Mayo doesn't count).

I later found out that actually the names were Anglicised from early Norse names with different etymologies.

In modern English, Waterford would be called Wetherford after Old Norse "veðra" meaning wether or sheep and Wexford should be called Oozeford after Old Norse "veisa" meaning ooze or mud.

both Viking settlements, the Anglisisation came from the Nose roots rather than Gaelic roots.
I was actually surprised the first time I learned Watford was a part of London rather than some coastal town.
The root word is fjord, obviously.

their Irish names are Port Lairge and Loch Gorman respectively

if only we got to keep the original names

In Norse, yes. Watford near London is actually just from the Old English "ford". Vikings never settled that much that far south.

Why don't you guys just re-Gaelicise all the place names? Lots of other postcolonial nations do it. I'm still surprised you bother learning English.

gee, why don't we continue a movement that advocated Celtic culture which started in the late 18th century. Why don't we create our own Irish language areas and Irish sports organisation. Everything will be sorted out shortly.

>Lots of other postcolonial nations do it.

India still has the second highest volume of English speakers in the world.
The first is the USA.
Great examples.

>I'm still surprised

because you are from a colonising nation, not a colonised one

it's very difficult to revert the harm that you caused, it's a lengthy process that is long from being over

>it's very difficult to revert the harm that you caused, it's a lengthy process that is long from being over

But will not unification make this process even harder for you guys? You'll be taking on a huge number of ex-colonists who have no intention of integrating with a native majority they see as culturally and racially inferior and who have pledged to see your people either totally subjugated or exterminated. It just seems insane to want to unite with those people.

>Lots of other postcolonial nations do it. India still has the second highest volume of English speakers in the world. The first is the USA.

India has undergone a massive renaming policy on its place names. Not that many Indians spoke English during the Raj (other than the settlers):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renaming_of_cities_in_India

USA is hardly a great example of a postcolonial country; it's a settler state with a settler majority. The presidents have been overwhelming British in descent and they've been at war with the natives for

>because you are from a colonising nation, not a colonised one
And we don't still speak Latin, Norse or French.
>>
>>70585568
you have some unionist-heavy areas like North Down that would not be ok with a United Ireland, I'm honestly ok with those cunts being ruled from an Independent Scotland

almost all of the North has either a Nationalist Majority or a mixed area (Foyle, Strabane, West Belfast, Mid Ulster, Newry and South Down being Nationalist strongholds) and mixed areas (Fermanagh-South Tyrone, South Belfast, certain areas in North Antrim)

You also have places like East Belfast and East Derry County that can be converted to the Nationalist cause

Every Irish town is fucking bilingual. We have Irish and English versions. Fuck off with this "this is how it should be done" bullshit

Yes, the Natives of the so-called USA. Why dont they just bring about their languages into common usage?

>And we don't still speak Latin, Norse or French.

the eternal anglo comes out on full display

I didn't realise the roman empire was in control of your island 95 years ago, how they must have oppressed you.

I'm very much for dropping all the remaining provinces from outside the island including NI. Most people I've talked to (English, Welsh, Scots, immigrants and their descendants) are of the same opinion.

You won't get that impression from this board since it now caters to the more /pol/-based white nationalist American audience and thus, UK Combat 18 Ulster-is-British Kill-all-Taigs crowd.

>Fuck off with this "this is how it should be done" bullshit
I'm not telling you how to run your country, I was just interested about how unification might go about dealing with the facts on the ground (which you've now informed me of).

>Yes, the Natives of the so-called USA. Why dont they just bring about their languages into common usage?
They do. The ones whose languages have survived the efforts to destroy them still promote them among their children

>I didn't realise the roman empire was in control of your island 95 years ago
They weren't but the after-effects of their empire is felt on us 1,600 years down the line. It's one of the reasons why England is separate from Scotland.
>how they must have oppressed you.
You could have asked the Ordovices about that, if the Romans hadn't had them exterminated.

bless 4chan for allowing me to witness such delusion

all the shit before that was such numale bullshit peddling, then you see this comment and it's worse than what the obviously anti-Irish Brits had to say

>You could have asked the Ordovices about that, if the Romans hadn't had them exterminated.

....why do they mention this shit? how on earth does this affect the current year?

I bet you're an anti-Corbyn Labour supporter whose thinking of moving to the Lib Dems
>>

>how on earth does this affect the current year?
Are you actually asking how do events in the past affect the present? Is that what you're asking? Or are you asking me how does Rome's legacy affect modern Britain? The Ordovices were not the only tribe to suffer.

>I bet you're an anti-Corbyn Labour supporter whose thinking of moving to the Lib Dems

On the contrary, I joined the Labour Party just to vote for Corbyn. I think he's the best thing to happen to Labour since Keir Hardy.
