Cavill is a wonderful actor. See him in the Man from Uncle then try to reconcile that performance with either of his as Superman. His problem is that the only thing Snyder can direct is action. He can't draw out great performances out of actor's the way more competent director can, and unfortunately, Cavill is arguably the biggest victim of this limitation.

99% of the damage in man of steel was caused by Zod and the kryptonians. Even in the final battle, almost all the major damage was caused by Zod throwing superman into things. It was exactly what you'd expect to happen should a race of super powerful beings come to earth with the intent of destroying things, where each being is seemingly faster and stronger than the Hulk in the MCU. I thought superman was beautifully crafted in the man of steel, a movie about a man with superpowers who lives in our times, his reason to fight was really well done, most of superman comics/movies miss the point, i think zack snyder did a terrific job giving clark kent a backstory where we would understand why he chose to fight for humanity, why he would risk his life for others, many people expect him to be a smiling guy who does good for no absolute reason, saving everyone and everything, that's pretty boring in my opinion, putting superman on a level where he can't save everyone but at least try is pretty much the best way to execute a superman movie in 21st century, and people need to understand this.
About Henry Cavill's performance i'll say this, taking the note that Zack Snyder chose this particular direction of the movie pretty much justifies his serious character, i've never been a big comic book fan, but man of steel changed my views on comic book movies, i felt connected to that character, the way he felt throughout the beginning to an end, i couldn't find anything wrong with his acting considering what i've stated in the beginning.
