The original word Apocalypse means uncovering, lifting the veil. It is the end of the world, in the sense that, it's the end of the world "as it is known", as a completely new world takes place. It's only in the last few thousands years it's been associated with destruction, and even then, destruction can be a part of the old meaning. The black plague could be considered an apocalypse in the traditional sense, in that eventually life as it was known gave way and changed in the renaissance that followed.
