Movie took the looks of Wc3 but the stories of 1 and 2. Those who played the first games were already familiar with the main characters and antagonists, though the SPOILERSargeras part was a bit hard to get desu.
That's why you could get some parts but not some others. This movie was a bit "if you played all the games and love the lore you will like it., else it will be an entertaining movie"

It has done better than expected so far and is number one almost everywhere it has been released. It's a very staggered release so its hard to understand the absolute numbers. It's been out for one or two or three weeks in 20 something countries, 30 something to go.
Maybe it can also do better than expected in US - I don't think anything is confirmed until it is confirmed.
In China it might be the biggest movie ever. Also, normally foreign films can only take 25% of the profit in China, but they may be able to get around that seeing as so many of the investors are Chinese and Legendary are now owned by the Chinese.
