That's the EXACT opposite of the truth.
The Hobbit story was rushed as fuck, and all scenes were stuffed with retarded action nonsense.
In LoTR, the characters had TIME to be characters, just sit down and talk once in a while.

The entire Gandalf vs Balrog fight is the most based scene of the trilogy.

But my personal favourite has to be the ending of Fellowship, with Aragorn's little speech to Legolas and Gimli, and then Frodo and Sam heading off alone in their adventure, with a "Concerning Hobbits" choir as the credits show

Not sure why this doesn't get more love.

First, the atmosphere is amazing. It reminds me of the scene in alien when they're in the old ship. We get a brief glimpse into a forgotten world and are lucky enough to see one of its many secrets.

Second, the balrog as a sort of lovecraftian, nebulous thing that exudes light in a dark world is even better than its physical manifestation, not that I dislike the physical manifestation is bad; I think that was also done quite well. There's just something about the line, "A Balrog. A demon of the ancient world. This foe is beyond any of you." that makes me giddy every time.

It is quite literally the most epic, perfect monster scene ever. I love the "HUH" screams in the music, and that "AAAHHHH" when Gandalf says the bridge is near. The score was composed by the Gods themselves during the entire Mines of Moria segment. Taking out the slight silly battle inside the tomb and the staircase platform scenes, it's quite possibly the best thing i've ever seen, even the Two Towers continuation with Gandalf and the Balrog falling down the pit.
>>
>>70513940
Too bad that entire scene was ruined later by hack writing via giving Faramir a get-out-of-death-free card because he's a named character. Those other knights who rode and died bravely? Eh, who gives a fuck about them.

Same guy.

I think the reason why I like it is because Tolkien remarked that Sam was his favourite character and I assume by that he put many of his thoughts in the voice of Sam. Even though this speech in question is shorter in the book and takes place elsewhere I like to think that it has some relevance to Tolkiens experience of the first world war and reconciling his beliefs with his surroundings. Maybe that's all bunk.

You know, rewatching those movies after becoming a bookfag; it's not just about his acting, he was the only fucking one who understood his character; i.e Ian Mckellen is the worst characterization of Gandalf, Lee was perfect for the part: he had the looks, the voice, and knew Tolkien in person (Christopher at least). But the movies had to be made by idiots, for idiots. So thank god they didn't fuck the best character that bad.

While as a singular part this scene was great, it's really hard to go wrong, there.

In my opinion, as great as Sean Bean's acting was, Boromir's characterization in the movie was just ruined. They practically made him into a villain from the very beginning, to emphasize and exalt Aragorn's character arc. He and Aragorn were never depicted as brethren, and it detracted from this scene.

The loyalty and friendship shown by Sam really stands out in contrast to the dangers they have faced, and the dangers the audience knows they will continue to face on their journey to Mordor.

No matter the threat that awaits them, no matter the horrors that may impact Middle Earth, their inherent goodness shines through and makes us remember what is worth fighting for.

The cave troll scene was dumb.

>I think I'm getting the hang of this!

I also have always thought the conceptual decisions made about the representation of the trolls were bad. They were depicted as pitiful animals being painfully slaughtered, and it felt out of place.
>>
>>70531016
I don't think that's true. Boromir is shown fooling around with the hobbits and generally caring deeply for the rest of the fellowship. He died protecting them and even on his deathbed he worries about them.

I suppose it's easy to forget those scenes as the one's showing him to be kind of a dick might be more memorable.
>>
Hard mode, what's the best scene in the hobbit movies. Nightmare mode, no Gollum or Smaug
>>
>>70515051
this is one of the "mindblowing plotwists" that everyone knows before even watching it, so it falls flat
kinda like the SW "I'm your father"
>>
>>70532087
>Boromir is shown fooling around with the hobbits

Yea that's true, but it was only one, single, very brief scene. But the general emphasis was much more heavily placed on the contrived/forced rivalry and antagonism between him and Aragorn. Especially in the extended edition, it's really bad.

>Aragorn and Boromir bickering and insulting each other in Lothlorien
>Gandalf says to Frodo: I don't trust Boromir
>Galadriel says to Frodo: Boromir's going to take the ring
>Two or three other additional scenes / cuts showing Boromir being a dick or lusting after the Ring

Not one scene where he and Aragorn are buddies and comrades from the royal lines of the same city. So when, suddenly, that angle is played at his death, my first impression is noticing how much more significant it could have been made if the film didn't warp the story more to plebeian bents.

The film didint need it. Powerfull scene. Boromir was a friend till the end. Sure there can be conflict with friends but in the end he was hero. I think it was interesting to see boromir as rival to aragorn and still at the end they were like brothers.
>>

All this is real. Imagine this in 2016. Green screen with green jump suits.
>>
>>70532652
>at the end they were like brothers.

It a little dumb and ingenuine, seeing that he and Aragorn had kind of been at each other's throats for most of the movie up until that point.

Normally I'm all for individual opinions.
But not when they're fucking wrong you degenerate
>>
>>70530458
All those scenes that show Gandalf as a benevolent old man, especially with Pippin, are wrong. Gandalf had bad temper, and while he did treat hobbits kindly he more often than not would bicker at everyone who questioned him.
>>
>>70533137
Did you miss the part where he was angry at Bilbo,Frodo,Sam,Aragorn, Denethor and a whole host of other characters?

He's not kindly, but neither is he a literal asshole either.
>>
>>70533137
He spent the whole Fellowship treating Pippin like shit and then when they met again in RoT he shitted on him again and then acted kindly to him because he needed him to do some sneaky hobbit shit.

Thorin's death wasn't too bad, and I don't mean his weird fight with that albino orc, i mean when he talks to bilbo after it
>>
>>70533137
I also prefer the 'crabby old sage' interpretation of Gandalf. It's more wizardly. Obviously in the movies they made him more outwardly friendly and grandpa-y because the plebs wouldn't like him otherwise.
>>
>>70532386
The Extended edition added more i think, like the scene where he talks to Aragorn about the White city, and when he tells Frodo not to blame himself for Gandalf death.

I already knew right there that the fobbit was going to be a trainwreck. The Dwarves looked like complete shit, all of them. Either handsome men actors who looked like Dwarves not at all, or goofy, cartoony bullshit. It just screamed: This is a giant cashgrab and we don't give two fucks about the story.

I love how this scene plays out.
The intro, where the camera runs along the uruk-hai. The way we get to see Boromir redeem himself. The choreography, the costumes, the music, the details. Of course this is one of many great LotR scenes, but this one affected me the most. Also after watching the deleted scene from the Two towers (the one with Boromir and Faramir) made this scene way sadder.

They don't make movies like these anymore. Why the FUCK is hollywood incapable to capture again the magic, the POWER of scenes like the last march of the ents or gandalf descending upon helm's deep, or the rohirrim charge? Was it simply because LotR is simply above everything else in terms of source material, or is it that modern high profile movies that are not neo-noir or capeshit just suck balls?

Honest answer: it's because LOTR was not fundamentally a Hollywood production. On many levels it was driven by a small country with something to prove.

Now New Zealand is also Hollywood.

If you don't have anything to say, the outcome will be mediocre, no matter how skilled you are.

Couldve been a lot gayer had they kept the songs in.
