Not sure why this doesn't get more love.
First, the atmosphere is amazing. It reminds me of the scene in alien when they're in the old ship. We get a brief glimpse into a forgotten world and are lucky enough to see one of its many secrets.
Second, the balrog as a sort of lovecraftian, nebulous thing that exudes light in a dark world is even better than its physical manifestation, not that I dislike the physical manifestation is bad; I think that was also done quite well. There's just something about the line, "A Balrog. A demon of the ancient world. This foe is beyond any of you." that makes me giddy every time.

It is quite literally the most epic, perfect monster scene ever. I love the "HUH" screams in the music, and that "AAAHHHH" when Gandalf says the bridge is near. The score was composed by the Gods themselves during the entire Mines of Moria segment. I think the reason why I like it is because Tolkien remarked that Sam was his favourite character and I assume by that he put many of his thoughts in the voice of Sam.
