Clarkson is just an old fashioned bloke, with some passion, some wit and a shitload of money.
From all reports he's a nice guy, but he doesn't kiss up to people and is a little short tempered.
IIRC the whole producer punching happened after they stayed back several hours to do reshoots in the middle of buttfuck nowhere late at night on the condition they got a hot steak dinner when they got back. Producer said yes then didn't deliver. Clarkson lost his temper and the producer didn't handle the situation the way he should have.
Not excusing Clarkson for what he did, the above isn't an excuse. But he's an old man who just wanted some beers and hot food with his mates and the BBC cronie with unlimited money and resources at his beck and call didn't do what he's paid to do so Clarkson lost his shit.
Shouldn't have hit him, but it's not like he just woke up angry one morning then punched a stranger in the back of the head.

The biggest issues with the current hosts is the lack of mechanical knowledge, so cheep car challenges are gone forever. Unless you want more episodes with Matt and/or Chris spending all the time on the back of a truck making hilarious comments.
Ramsey would be no better in that regard. It's easy to like cars, it's hard to know cars.

They always struck me as having a very antagonistic producer. Sometimes, like with the Robin challenge, it made for hilarious tv, but when your stars are exhausted and stranded in the middle of nowhere because of you, you don't abuse that power, you just don't.
What Jeremy did was stupid, but I agree, I might have done the same.
